  2. Familiar Text • The “good Samaritan” • Lesson on involvement • Serious situation for Jesus

  3. The Lawyer • Background • Expert in Jewish Law • Loved to wear titles • Flattered Jesus (v. 25; Acts 22:3) • He had no schooling (Matthew 7:28; Luke 4:21; John 7:15)

  4. The Lawyer • His question • Popular one (v. 25; 18:18) • Good one about personal responsibility

  5. The Lawyer • Jesus’ answer • Already answered (v. 26) • One could read the Law and find the answer • Differ over what it does not say

  6. The Lawyer • Lawyer’s problem • Wanted to prove he was right • Knew what was required (v. 27) • Wanted to “justify himself” (v. 29) • Be an “expert” but not keep it

  7. The Priest and Levite • Ceremonial type religion • “Looked good” (Matthew 15:9) • “Justification” for passing by a dying man (vv. 30-32)

  8. The Priest and Levite • Beware of this attitude • Easy to talk about problems • Harder to help solve them • See something that needs to be done, take care of it (James 2:24)

  9. The Samaritan • Came by and did something • Had compassion (v. 33) • Robbers, priest, and Levite didn’t • True compassion motivates (1 John 3:17, 18)

  10. The Samaritan • Accepted the challenge • Impartial (Acts 10:34, 35) • Help was spontaneous, personal, not by committee • Thorough, involved sacrifice (2 Samuel 24:24)

  11. Application • Law was clear • Love God and neighbor (v. 27) • Tried to dodge the issue • Jesus asked who acted like a neighbor (v. 36) • Lawyer knew (v. 37)

  12. Application • Contrast in attitudes • Lawyer: Who do I help? • Samaritan: Anyone • Some only want to be helped

  13. Application • Jesus said to be a neighbor • Way to happiness • Start “living” when we start helping (v. 28)

  14. Conclusion • Concerned about eternal life? • Practicing true religion
