  2. 1950-1960 • NV was devastated by the First Indochina War • By early 1960s, though, was ready to fight again to unite the two Vietnams • What happened? How did they transform the country?

  4. Agricultural Change • Poor peasants = 60% of rural population • Landlords’ land seized and redistributed among poor peasants • A landlord could be tried and executed (50,000 executed by 1956) How would the peasants feel about Ho Chi Minh and his nationalist-communist revolution?

  5. Industrial Change • Exported coal • No private industry (nationalised with communism) • NV’s industrial development depended on aid from other Communist countries: $622 million from China $365 million from Soviet Union $38 million from Eastern European countries

  6. 1960 • NV transformed from agricultural society to semi-industrial society • People well-fed • People politically-educated • Industry suitable for war economy • Fastest-growing economy in South-East Asia

  7. Women in NV • Now economic producers, farm and factory managers, directors of hospitals, soldiers • Involved in building, road-making and repair • Read the quote on page 49. If you were a North Vietnamese woman, how would you feel about this?

Leadership in NV For 30 years, leadership stayed the same: • President Ho Chi Minh: inspiration for revolutionary struggle, even after death 2) Prime Minister Pham Van Dong: second-in-command 3) Le Duan: Viet Minh & NLF organiser 4) Vo Nguyen Giap: military commander (and one of the most successful soldiers of the century) Tight discipline and unity: leaders lived amongst people and got paid average wages

NV Army • Soldiers’ political ideas as important as guns • Political officials attached to each army unit • Conscripts were peasants aged 20-25: had respect for authority, conditioned to subordinate their own interests to the interest of the unit and nation Read about the NVA on page 50: ready for TOTAL WAR
