Summary of Planning Process • Pictou Regional Development Association facilitates strategic planning sessions in May, July, September and October 2005 • Fall 2005 - East River Valley Group identifies the Kiosk Project as a priority and PRDC works with group to prepare and submit funding proposal • Spring 2006 – Formation of the East River Valley Community Development Association • Spring 2006 - Presentation to County Council to request funding for kiosk project. Approved • July 2006 – ACOA approves funding for kiosk project • February, March, April 2007 – PRDC facilitates strategic planning sessions for final plan • July 2007 – First kiosk opens in Churchville • August 2007 – DRAFT strategic plan presented to Council for review

Purpose of Planned Meetings • Initiatives having a potential impact on community economic development • Critical issues that the communities of the East River Valley may face related to community economic development • Important challenges that the East River Valley may encounter • The most exciting opportunities for the East River Valley • The desired vision for the future • Identification of the key strategic directions for community economic development • Strategic initiative actions plans to move the issues forward

  4. Our Guiding Principles As this plan is being implemented, we have identified some key principles to guide all activities. Those who bring this plan alive should endeavor to ensure that: • The communities of the East River Valley will be seen as communities that care, adapt and work together to promote a sustainable community. • Opportunities are created for all citizens to participate and to be included. • The Strategic Plan is reviewed and/or revised on an ongoing basis to ensure the objectives and goals are met.

  5. The Mission of the East River Valley Community Development Association: “To promote the sustainability of the communities of the East River Valley through economic and cultural development”

  6. Strategic Directions Identified: • Infrastructure Development • Marketing & Promotion • Tourism Development & Promotion • Sustainability & Youth Retention • Wind Energy/Rural Green Development

  7. Strategic Direction 1.0: Infrastructure Development 1.1 To identify bad roads that require maintenance 1.2 To install more signage throughout the ERV 1.3 To make improvements to the old Eureka Schoolhouse 1.4 To identify and clean up unsightly properties

  8. Strategic Direction 2.0: Marketing & Promotion 2.1 To promote the East River Valley as communities that have lots to offer citizens, businesses and tourists. Promote amenities and services of the East River Valley 2.2 To promote year round recreational/environmental activities and to identify recreational opportunities 2.3 To promote and build on the ’50 Mile Yard Sale’ 2.4 To develop and promote a Farmers Country Market

  9. Strategic Direction 3.0: Tourism Development & Promotion 3.1 To promote the history, culture & heritage of the East River Valley 3.2 To develop and promote Eco-Tourism in the East River Valley

  10. Strategic Direction 4.0: Sustainability & Youth Retention 4.1 To build on and sustain strong community groups and encourage community pride and spirit 4.2 Retaining our youth and addressing a declining population

  11. Strategic Direction 5.0: Wind Energy/Rural Green Development 5.1 To construct a wind turbine project in the East River Valley 5.2 To become a model Rural Green Economic Zone
