  2. Objectives • Provide correct names for three abnormal colors of the skin and identify the cause of each color. • Describe at least four skin eruptions. • Describe at least four diseases of the integumentary system. • Define, pronounce, and spell key terms.

PIGMENTATION SKIN COLOR Melanin: brownish, black pigment can lead to a black, brown, or yellow skin tint depending on racial origin Albino: a person without color pigment (skin is pinkish) Erythema: reddish color caused by burns or congestion Cyanosis: bluish discoloration caused by insufficient oxygen

  4. Skin Eruptions CAUTION! The following pictures are graphic in nature. Macules: flat spots such as freckles Papules: firm, raised areas such as pimples Vesicles: blisters, fluid filled sacs Pustules: pus-filled sacs such as acne Crusts: areas of dried pus and blood; scabs Wheals: itchy, elevated areas with irregular shape, hives, insect bites Ulcer: loss of skin surface that may extend into the dermis
