  1. Advances in War Technology WWii Travis and Thomas Ms. Stoski, Socials 11

  2. TechnOlogy in the air • The Second World War was very strongly influenced by the war in the air. Jet propelled airplanes were now being used and manufactured. These jet-propelled plans could fly higher, as well as faster, than propeller operated planes. Both sides in the war, Axis and Ally, we’re trying to produce as many jets as possible. However, the outcome of the war was not affected by jet’s due to not being perfected until about 1945.

  3. Treating the Wounded • Medical care was very important during the Second World War, due to the number and severity of the injuries and sickness’. A British scientist by the name of Alexander Fleming first isolated the antibiotic penicillin in 1929, and by 1941, was being used to treat infections in humans. Due to the use of penicillin, soldiers were recovering significantly faster.

  4. Secret Codes A new coding machine developed by the German’s, known as an “Enigma” was a great advance in technology in the Second World War. The “Enigma” spurred the development of a computer that could decipher the thought impossible German signals. (Cranny, 141)

  5. The Atomic Bomb • Developed by the United States • The warfare was completely changed by the this weapon • Radioactive material is highly concentrated in the bomb • Radioactive material the size of a baseball could destroy an entire city

  6. The German v-2 • This rocket’s range in distance was 350km • Mostly used in attacks against London near the end of the war • Designed by Werner von Braun •  He moved to the US after the war • His designs later lead to weapons being used in 1969

  7. Radar • Full name = Radio detection and ranging • “An electronic system that uses waves to detect objects beyond range of vision” • Was used as a major aspect in the Battle of Britain • Revealed every major information, such as: Shape, distance, speed, size etc.

  8. Submarines • Submarines were used by both the Axis and the Allies • These Submarines were used more in the First War • Batteries from the Submarines could be recharged underwater because of the “Snorkel” This made it possible for the submarines to spend as little time above water to prevent being attacked
