Venereal disease is a sexually transmitted disease that is contracted by sexual contact and transmitted via semen, vaginal secretions, or blood during sexual intercourse. Sexually transmitted infection risk differs by gender. Women are more susceptible to Chlamydia, while for men, especially homosexuals it is syphilis. Can STD be treated? Some sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and syphilis can be treated with proper medication. But importantly safe behavior is the best bet to prevent STD. You must keep in mind the following. Sexually transmitted infections, including venereal disease, more often than not are asymptomatic. Many cases of gonorrhea and Chlamydia go unnoticed. This can result in several long-term consequences including infertility in women. Statistics show syphilis rates are increasing, specifically among men. If untreated, syphilis can lead to long-term complications including loss of vision. Here are a few things you must do to reduce risk of contracting STD. Get to know your partner before having sex with him/her. Be frank to talk about STD and getting tested. Use a condom in the approved manner and use one each time you have sex. Do not mix alcohol and recreational drugs. This combination greatly reduces your ability to make proper decisions and can lead to risky behavior. Limit to one partner if possible.
