    1. Diseases Associated with Alcohol Acute and Chronic Effects

    3. What happens when you drink alcohol: Consumption, Absorption, Distribution 25% of alcohol consumed is absorbed directly into the blood stream through the stomach lining 75% is absorbed through the small intestine into the blood stream Alcohol is distributed by the blood to every organ in the body The organs of greatest sensitivity to the toxic and desiccant effects of alcohol are the heart, the brain, and the liver. Diseases are Cardiomyopathy, Korsakoff Psychosis, and Cirrhosis of the Liver

    5. Major Diseases* Associated with Alcohol Abuse Cirrhosis of Liver: A serious hardening of the tissue caused by destruction of liver cells. Cardiomopathy: Degeneration of Cardiac Muscle Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome: Mental disorder caused by Malnutrition and Destruction of CNS Neurons *Major Diseases have to do with the Desiccant Effect and Toxic Effect of alcohol.

    6. Short-Term (Acute) Effects of Alcohol Kidneys: Increased Urinary Output due to Diuretic effect on Pituitary Gland (Poor Nutrient Absorption Long-term). Cardiovascular System: 1) Increased Heart Rate; 2) Increased or Decreased Blood Pressure; 3) Dilation of Peripheral Vessels; 4) Constriction of Coronary Arteries. Central Nervous System: Desiccant Effect on Neurons & Impaired Sensorimotor Coordination

    7. Long-Term (Chronic) Effects of Alcohol Abuse

    8. Facts about Liver Disease Among heavy drinkers, 95 percent will develop fatty livers 25 percent will develop Alcohol hepatitis 15 percent will develop Cirrhosis of the Liver Risk of Cirrhosis for person who drinks 7-8 drinks daily for more than 20 years is 50 percent; after 30 years it is 80 percent.

    9. Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome The Neurotoxic Effect of alcohol destroys CNS neuronsthis can cause a condition known as Korsakoff Psychosis The Desiccant Effect of alcohol on the gastrointestinal system can lead to 1) inflammation, 2) ulceration and infection, 3) gastric bleeding, 4) poor absorption of nutrients, 5) malnourishment. This can produce a condition known as Wernickes Syndrome Typically, these conditions occur together and are therefore referred to as Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome.

    10. Signs & Symptoms of W-K Syndrome Wernicke's syndrome is caused by poor absorption of nutrients, especially Vit B1, Thiamin. Symptoms include 1) impaired muscle coordination, 2) paralysis of normal eye movement, 3) distorted thinking. Korsakoff Psychosis is characterized by: 1) confusion, 2) short-term memory loss, 3) confabulation.

    11. Increased risk of cancer due primarily to desiccant effect Mouth Throat Cervix Bladder Pancreas breast

    12. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS): When the Mother Drinks, the Baby Drinks FAS is nations leading cause of preventable Mental Retardation. Over 5,000 infants are born in the U.S. each year with FASthere is probably as many as 50,000 others born with alcohol related problems. One in three babies born per 1,000 live births suffer from FAS. Among Native Americans (Indians) the rate for FAS may be as high as 10 per 1,000.

    13. Responsibility The chronic effects of alcohol occur only when it is abused There are no ill effects of alcohol if it is consumed RESPONSIBILY RESPONSIBLE means that the guidelines for drinking are followed NMT one drink a day for women NMT two drinks a day for men.

    14. Children with FAS have multiple problems Diminished head capacity Impaired mental development Impaired physical development Facial abnormalities: thin upper lip, small eye openings, wide nasal bridge, small chin, misshapened ears Defects of the extremities FAS may outgrow many of the physical abnormalities but none of the mental abnormalities

    15. FAS children have difficulties in: Concentration Problem solving Learning Recall Eating and sleeping disorders Relationship difficulties Judgment May commit crimes without guilt or remorse Sub clinical manifestations

    16. Unmarried young women with little education have highest risk of FAS babies Unmarried Under age 25 Low education THERE IS NO KNOWN THRESHOLD OF SAFE ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION
