History • end of the 80s: Smog • plans for urban-suburban railway (Stadtregionalbahn) • decision pro S-Bahn • project Steirertakt (basic regular interval timetable) • first orders 1998 • further development and planning until 2007 • implementation of the new timetable 2008:start of S-Bahn Steiermark

What‘s already been done… • S-Bahn „warm-up“ activities: • new: regular 60 minutes intervals on all routes(exception: Ostbahn) • new: „rendezvous“-interchange nodes on the hour, (thus S-Bahn becomes the 3rd urban public transport mode in Graz) • new: in the afternoon 30-minutes intervals for out-of-town services • new: on S-1 and S-515-minutes intervals into town • new: evening service
Success of the S-Bahn • in total: +4,900 passengers/day • in total: +18% (now: 31,800 passengers/day) • S-5: most used S-Bahn-route(7,400 passengers/day) • S-5 : route with the highest absolute increase (+1,350 passengers/day) • S-51 Radkersburger Bahn: route with the highest relative increase (+90% or +290 passengers)
How to proceed • timetable 2011 • Ostbahn becomes S-3 • Weizer Bahn S-31 • Koralmbahn becomes S-6 • 60-min. interval Sundays/holidays • expansion-stage priority 1 • continuous 30-min. interval • demand-oriented further development of the 15-min. intervals during peak-hours around the city of Graz
