Mary Low Carver • (1850-1926) • First woman to attend Colby College • Also the first name on the roll of Sigma Kappa, first to preside at an initiation, and first woman invited to become a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society • Brilliant student, always studying • Graduated in 1875; highest rank in her class • Mary was always interested in the future of Sigma Kappa • In the 1880s and 1890s delegates were chosen to travel to the town of Augusta to consult Mary Carver on matters from furniture selection to extending the sorority beyond Colby College

Elizabeth Gorham Hoag • (1857-1875) • Wrote artistic and musical plays • Lived with her widowed mother and her Quaker Grandmother • Enjoyed languages and literature but disliked math • Designed the first Sigma Kappa emblem • She contracted tuberculosis and during sophomore year grew more and more frail • The women were aware of her worsening condition and worked to prepare their first initiation in February so Elizabeth was able to see her cousin initiated • Died at eh age of 18

Ida Fuller Pierce • (1854-1893) • Dynamic, inquiring, social minded women • The practical voice in the early planning of the sorority • Brought ideas of others down to earth • Became a successful businesswoman and founded a hotel for girls in Kansas City • She was also vice president of a bank • Served as housemother for a several years • Traveled to Sigma Kappa functions

Louise Helen Coburn • (1856-1949) • Scholar, writer, and poet • Second woman to graduate from Colby University • Second Sigma Kappa to attain Phi Beta Kappa • Developed a strong belief that the sorority was bound to live and grow • Wrote much of the initiation ceremony • Witnessed Sigma Kappa grow beyond expectations

FrancEs Mann Hall • (1878-1935) • Before enrolling at Colby College she was a high school teacher • Was a bit older than the other girls but was still in her twenties at the time • Left college junior year because of astigmatic headaches • Married George Washington Hall and they taught together • First Sigma Kappa to get married
