Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Objective: curriculum that combines didactic lectures, workshops as well as experiential learning focused on Quality, Patient Safety and delivery of High Value care. In addition, they will gain insight into the need of ‘beyond blame’ culture to address system issues in a systematic manner.

  4. QIPS Cores • Introduction to Quality, high value care and Patient safety • Anatomy of a mistake • Quality improvement methodology • Understanding Patient Perspectives • Levels of systems • Lean and Six Sigma in Healthcare • Introduction to statistical methods in QI

  5. QIPS Workshops 1. HVCC 2.0: Eliminating Healthcare Waste and Over-Ordering of Tests 2. HVCC 2.0: High-Value Medication prescribing 3. HVCC 2.0: Healthcare Costs and Payment Models 4. HVCC 2.0: Overcoming Barriers to HVC: Choosing wisely 5. Writing and presenting/publishing your data Completion of the IHI (Institute for Healthcare improvement) Basic certificate

  6. QIPS Learning Participation on Hospital QI committee Completion of a longitudinal QI project aligned with Hospital’s KRAs Example of Cost Conscious projects: Adherence to DVT prophylaxis guidelines, Daily CXR ordering in MICCU, Prophylactic PPI use on medicine wards.

  7. QIPS Timeline • PGY1: Didactics 1-6 + Workshop 1&2 • PGY2: Didactic lecture 7, workshop 3,4,5, Completion of IHI Certificate, Plan and initiate QI project • PGY 3: Complete and present QI project, Submit and Present an abstract or manuscript

Medical Education pathway : Three-year longitudinal program , for residents who anticipate a career in academic medicine and hold aspirations of leadership roles in institutions with academic health sciences programs. Clinical faculty members are rarely formally prepared for their teaching roles and many express strong interest in developing their competencies as educators

  9. Goals 1. Train residents in the basics of bedside teaching, lecturing, evaluative processes, and the basics of medical education research. 2. Provide the foundation and training necessary for residents to pursue an academic career in medical education. 3. Allow residents the opportunity to explore what an academic career in medical education entails. 4. Assist residents in setting up a network for future collaboration, and in identifying appropriate mentors within their area of academic medical education focus.

  10. Enrollment Residents will self-select into the MEP based on personal interest and are encouraged to inform the MedEd Chief Resident Participation in the MedEd Pathway is voluntary and residents can discontinue their commitment at any time.

  11. Time Commitment The lectures and workshops will occur on a monthly basis and last about one hour. Scholarship in Teaching planning and completion will occur in the 2nd and 3 rd years of the program and required a variable amount of time depending on the nature of the project.

  12. Advantages Residents completing the MEP will received a Certificate of Achievement and their acquired skills will be highlighted in their letters of recommendation. In addition, they will receive credit for the appropriate set of milestones achieved.

  16. GIM pathway: Mission Providing career enhancing experiences beyond traditional medical residency training with special emphasis on general internal medicine patient care

  17. Who Can Join? Anyone who has an interest in ambulatory or hospitalist medicine What makes it special? Experiential workshops for GIM procedures ( skin biopsies, joint arthrocentesis, ultrasound at the bedside) GIM didactics (contract negotiation, billing and coding, career seminars) 1:1 mentorship with select internists Exclusive access to select electives (e.g. dermatology) Early access to ACP lobbying day application Certificate/Diploma to indicate completion of pathway at graduation

  18. How Do I Join? Contact either Drs. Ivey-Brown or Rodriguez to let them know of your interest Look in the Chief weekly e-mail for announcements regarding meeting times and events!

  19. Research ACP day is fast approaching. Abstracts are due in less than one month. For interesting cases, please come see me and talk to your attendings/co-residents. For all potential projects/ongoing projects PLEASE let me know ASAP. In order to receive reimbursement for research projects, it must be signed off by the program beforehand.
