God’s promise to Abraham (Gen 12:7) • God’s Prophecy concerning their deliverance from bondage (Gen 15:12-17) • Joseph’s words (Gen 50:22-26) • Sufferings before glory • Jesus (Luke 24:26; I Peter 1:11) • His people (I Peter 4:13, 5:10) • Suffering has a maturing & purifying effects on lives • Leaders show medals, but no scars • Suffering make people bitter, not better • Tool for building godly character (2 Cor 12:1-10)

  4. Suffering gives wisdom • Suffering as a gift from God • Submission • Submit to authority • Moses’ assistant (24:13) • God’s pattern for leadership: Matt 25:21, faithful over few things leads to faithful over many things • Obedient servant • Joshua 1:7 • Delay

Inheritance through faith & patience • Joshua & Caleb endured trials (40 years) to claim inheritance • Leaders must learn how to wait • Vision of future victory is what motivates a true leader • “O unbelieving and perverse generations…how long shall I say with you and put up with you “ (Luke 9:14 NIV) • Joshua’s Leadership • Principles of leadership can be taught, but to be a leader only can be learned on the field of action

Characteristics of Joshua’s leadership style He walked with God • “Thy servant of the Lord • God communicated His will to Joshua • He meditated daily on the law of God (Josh 1:6,7,9,18) • He was a man of prayer (7:6-9) He had courage • 4 times (Joshua 1:6,7,9,18) • To be a successful leader • To stand for what you believe • To do what God wants you to do • Bravery: The capacity to perform even when scared half to death (Omar Bradley)

Leadership involves risks • “He who love his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life (John 12:21 NIV) • Matthew 25:24-30 • Joshua’s courage • To fight the enemies • To deal with Achan • To challenge the tribes to claim He had a plan and followed it • It takes planning & strategy to do God’s work successfully

He didn’t quit • Concerning Ai, Joshua admitted failure, sought His face, went back, and won the battle • Gibeonites • The successful leader isn’t the one who is always right, because there isn’t any • The successful leader is a person who make the best decision he can & keep going when he make mistakes • He can learn from mistakes 7 know how to get victory out of defeat • Experience is a tough teacher because it always gives the exam first & teaches lesson afterwards • Mistakes into mirror: you see only yourselves & be more miserable

Mistakes in window: we will see the Lord & get strength we need to try again He enlisted others & commanded their respect • Met a work of one man, but thousands • Joshua served God & His people & they followed him because they knew they could trust him • Joshua had authority and stature • We need more servants than celebrities • Real leaders use their authority to build people, not people to build authority

He was concerned about the future • He desired that the people know the Lord & serve Him with their whole heart He glorified God • He set up a monument at Gilgal • “All the people of the earth may know the hand of the Lord, that is mighty (Joshua 3:10) • Repeatedly (6:16, 10:14, 11:6-8, 13:6, 19:3, 21:43-45) • True leader is somebody who takes twice blame & half as much credit • Joshua’s Message

Practical message: God keeps His promises & enables His servants to succeed if they will trust Him & obey His word • Spiritual message: God has a rich inheritance for His children now and they can claim it by faith • People • Still in bondage in Egypt • Wandering in the wilderness of unbelief and receiving no inheritance by faith • Borderline • Those who follow their Joshua and enter the Promised Land & claim their inheritance • Crossing the Jordan & entering the land: dying to self & old life & walking in new life and enjoying the fullness of God’s blessing as we serve the Lord and glorify Him

Joshua’s God • The Lord is the key person in the book, not Joshua • God of His people Israel • God of the covenant being made through Moses • “The Lord your God” • “The Lord of all the earth” (3:11) • God who keeps His promises (Joshua 23:14) • Holy God who will not tolerate sin • Forgiving God • God who requires obedience on His people’s part • Secret of the success: faith & obedience to the Word of God • God who never fails although we may fail Him • God who is gracious • God of wonders
