  2. Grant v. Lee • Constant fighting between General Robert E. Lee and General Grant • First battle – Wilderness near Fredericksburg, Virginia (two straight days) • Continues Next – battle at Spotsylvania. • 1) unable to break confederate lines and heads to Cold Harbor northeast of Richmond. • 2) Grant launches an all out attack but fails to win – both sides suffer large casualties.

  3. Grant v. Lee • Grant orders Philip Sheridan to take cavalry and attack north and west of Richmond. • Grant puts Petersburg under siege? What is a siege? • UNION STRATEGY IS TO RELENTLESSLY ATTACK THE SOUTHERN FORCES UNTIL THEY SURRENDER

  4. Union Victories in the South • August 1864, Union Navy led by Farragut, closed the port of Mobile, Alabama. (Last major Confederate port east of Miss Riv. • Union General Sherman marches from Chattanooga toward Atlanta. He cuts roads and RR leading to ATL. Confed. evacuates ATL. • Sherman burns all military area in ATL. Spreads and burns 1/3 of city.

  5. Union Victories in the South • November 1864, Sherman begins the March to the Sea. Kills and burns everything on the way. Seizes Savannah on December 21, 1864. • Decides to turn north towards SC and burns everything including 12 cities. • WHY DESTROY EVERYTHING IN THE PATH OF SHERMAN?

  6. The South Surrenders • Democrats nominate General George McClellan for President in 1864. • Promised to stop the war and negotiate with South to restore peace • Lincoln wins election. Considers it a mandate to end slavery with the 13th Amendment • General Lee surrenders to General Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. • Union will not prosecute Confederate soldiers for treason

The South Surrenders • Lincoln gives a speech laying out his plan in restoring the South to the Union. • April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth shot and killed Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theater. • Civil War saves Union and strengthened the power of federal gov’t over the states • Effectively ends slavery and the Southern economy is devastated. • The Union prevails!!
