  3. 2. The Road to Gettysburg 1. McClellan let Lee escape after Antietam and was fired. 2. Lincoln replaced him with Ambrose Burnside 3. After being defeated at Fredericksburg, Burnside was replaced by Hooker 4. Hooker was defeated by Lee at Chancellorsville 5. Hooker was replaced by Meade as Lee headed North to attack once again

  4. 3. Gettysburg 1. Union lost 23,000 troops the South lost 28,000 2. Union victory strengthened the Republicans 3. Great Britain chose once again not to recognize the Confederacy 4. Lee remained on the defensive for the rest of the war

  5. 4. Gettysburg Address 1. Lincoln dedicated the battlefield as a military cemetery 2. The Address was not initially revered 3. Only later gained the status it holds today

  6. 5. Grant secures Tennessee 1. After winning at Vicksburg, Grant moves toward Chattanooga 2. If they controlled Chattanooga they would control the rail lines to Atlanta 3. Grant is placed in charge of the Union forces in the West, then eventually as promoting him to Lieutenant General after defeating the Confederates at Chattanooga with the combined victories at Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain

  7. 5. Grant vs. Lee 1. Grant left Sherman in charge in the west while he went to D.C. to face Lee 2. Grant attacked relentlessly from The Wilderness to Cold Harbor 3. Grant decided to lay siege to Petersburg after encountering it’s formidable defenses.

  8. 6. Union Victories in the South 1. Admiral Farragut seals off access to the Bay of Mobile – August 5th 1864 2. Sherman destroyed the rail lines near then burned Atlanta before marching to the sea. 3. Total War on the South 4. After capturing Savannah he turned north to South Carolina where he set out to “wreak vengeance upon S.C. 7. Election of 1864 1. McClellan ran (D) against Lincoln 2. McClellan campaigned on ending the war 3. Capturing Atlanta helped Lincoln 4. Proposed the 13th Amendment to end slavery 5. Lee surrendered April 9th 1865
