  1. Welcome to Reading Recovery! Presented by: Suzanne Pettifer and Melissa Salter

Goals of Reading Recovery • To provide children with the reading and writing skills needed to perform within the average range in their classrooms • To provide children with useful problem-solving strategies to use while reading and writing • To help children become active risk takers • To help children continue to make gains in reading and writing after Reading Recovery

  3. What is Reading Recovery? • A program developed by Marie Clay in New Zealand (1970) Brought to the USA by Pinnell and Lyons (1984) • A highly effective short-term intervention (12-20 weeks) of one-to-one tutoring for first grade students in need of extra support

  4. What happens during every 30 minute lesson? • Child reads several books (familiar and new) • Child writes a short story (sentence) • Child works with words and sounds • Child learns to problem solve while reading and writing (with teacher help)

  5. Who makes up the Reading Recovery Team? Child Classroom Teacher Parent Reading Recovery Teacher

  6. Child’s Role in the Reading Recovery Program • Have good attendance in school • Complete homework • Homework Book: name/word/letter, cut-up sentence, picture • Read books to guardian • Bring Reading Recovery bag home each night and return it to school the next day (with reading books and homework book)

  7. Parent’s Role • Ensure child’s attendance at school • Assist child with homework • Read cut-up sentence to child (child should not copy the sentence!) • Be a “listener” for book readings • Communicate with teachers • Observe Reading Recovery lesson(s) • Encourage and praise child’s efforts and accomplishments

  8. Classroom Teacher’s Role • Regularly meet with Reading Recovery teacher • Meet with child daily in a guided reading group • Share observations with parent and Reading Recovery teacher

  9. Reading Recovery Teacher Role • Plan daily lessons for child which build on student’s strengths and needs • Share information with parent and classroom teacher • Help child make extreme gains in reading and writing • To help foster a love for literacy in all children

  10. Homework (Every Night) • Read books to parent/guardian • Yellow homework journal • Name, letter, or word work • Cut-Up Sentence • glue in sentence, draw picture • Word Ring
