  3. Presenters • Miss Greene- Debate I Honors teacher and Coach • Mr. Faso- Miramar’s Principal • Megan West- Broward County District Chair

  4. Superintendent Partners with the NFL • NFL- National Forensic League • Forensic- Adjective meaning “suitable for public speaking or debate.” • District Wide! • But why?!

  5. Benefits • Honors Credit (5.0 Scale) • Induction into an Academic Honors Society (NFL) • Distinction at Graduation (Chords) • Enhances College Resume

  6. Students who participate in forensics will: 1. learn to overcome and calm speaking anxieties 2. receive valuable training for college and future careers (resumes) 3. increase their public communication skills 4. develop improved study habits and research skills 5. become familiar with current societal issues 6. be open to both sides of an issue,

Students who participate in forensics will: 7. learn to consider and adapt to different audiences 8. be more prepared to speak on their feet 9. learn how to lose gracefully and respect dissenting opinions 10. learn how accept criticism and be judged on their performance 11. learn how to work with others, as individuals and a team 12. develop time allocation, organizational, critical thinking and reasoning skills

  9. Requirements Semester 1: 2 Afterschool Wednesday Tournaments 1 Saturday Tournament Semester 2: 2 Afterschool Wednesday Tournaments 1 Saturday Tournament • Total of 6 days for the year.

  10. $50 Dues • $50 includes: • T-Shirt • 1 event in all Wednesday tournaments • 1 judge fee • 1 or 2 Saturdays and food • NFL membership • Solutions: • Pay full $50 • $25 by 9/13 • Fundraising • See Me Individually • Tournaments fees: • Wednesdays $3 • Saturdays $10- $50

  11. Transportation • Wednesdays: • Bused to Nova on Wednesdays • Bused back to Miramar? • Saturday: • Parent/Guardian’s responsibility to and from events • Pick up/Carpool • See Me for individual concerns

  12. Judging at Tournaments • Bring our own judges to EACH event • Number of judges depends on attending students • You can attend tournaments to watch! • Judge Training Saturday (9/7)- Hollywood Hill High School 8:30-11:00am

  13. Tournament Events • 1. Extemporaneous Speaking • 2. Original Oratory • 3. Interpretation (Dramatic, Humorous, and Duo) • 4. Cross-Examination Team Debate • 5. Lincoln/Douglas Debate • 6. Congressional Debate (Student Congress) • 7. Public Forum Team Debate
