OMS YOU are the “Blue Angel” TEAM- everyone is a member… TEAMWORK. • Common Core State Standards = Time to raise the bar • Shared Values = Peak performance • Purpose-OMS will provide a secure and challenging learning environment which will empower all students to achieve their greatest potential. We will be the bridge that allows students to reach the next level of learning. • Mission- To provide a curriculum focused on the total development of the child through a variety of educational experiences. We are committed to fostering in students the desire and the capacity to become life-long learners and responsible citizens. • Actions- Primary commitment of OMS is student learning. Actively involved in the learning process with a variety of instructional approaches used to support their learning abilities. Experience success. Student’s self-esteem and self-discipline are enhanced by positive relationships. Learning must be to move beyond memorization of essential information toward the development of problem-solving skills. Learning is promoted best in a safe, clean, and comfortable environment.

Instructional Shifts--CCSS • ELA- 1-Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction. 2-Reading, writing, & speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary & informational. 3-Regular practice with complex text & its academic language. • MATH- 1-Focus strongly where the Standards focus. 2-Coherence: think across grades, & link to major topics within grades. 3-Rigor: require conceptual understanding, procedural skill & fluency, & application with intensity. These shifts can be applied in ALL classes/disciplines.

CLOSE READING Activity… • Read to yourself the Exemplar Text From “The Preamble: We the People” • Once everyone has finished reading, write down your responses to the questions you will hear. • Share time. First, Table group. Then, Whole group. *This is an example of what close reading will look like. This puts accountability for all students to think deeply about the passage instead of waiting for the teacher or partner to tell them what it means.

  10. OMS Commitments to Common Core Roll Out... August 2012 • Provide opportunities for all teachers to increase awareness of Common Core and to learn to teach within its frameworks. • Create a Professional Library of tasks across the curriculum. Each teacher will assign a task (once a month) that requires students to articulate their thought process in arriving at a solution. This task will be submitted to the Professional Library. • Communicate with all stakeholders the value and rationale of Common Core.
