  1. ENVIROMENTAL POLICIES – LOCAL VS. GLOBAL STANDARDS Section E2, Group 2 Alberto Campo Ilan Hadass Laura Li Alek Ljubinkovic Bernd Schossman Scott Thompson IPA Core Course

  2. LOCAL VIEW • Enviromental impact – Historical context • The trade-offs we face in China • Potencial consequences for the future • Other alternatives?

  3. ENVIROMENTAL IMPACT – HISTORICAL CONTEXT • Western development process in last 100 years have led to: • Their economic development • Their natural resources degradation • Their enviromental concern/policies • The West expects China to develop according to an unfair model that they defined and benefits their interest in the current situation • The Chinese government has defined their own realistic enviromental polices to better match the urgent needs of the people in the country • Even the U.S. is not respecting some of the western enviromental agreements We comply with the enviromental regulations in China which we’ll demonstrate is better adapted to the local community interests

  4. LOCAL VIEW • Enviromental impact – Historical context • The trade-offs we face in China • Potencial consequences for the future • Other alternatives?

  5. THE TRADE-OFFS WE FACE IN CHINA • China’s urgent needs are more economic and social than environmental  ASK THE CHINESE!! • History proves that environmental issues are just important in the very long term  LET US DEVELOP FIRST!! • On top of that, complying with Western standards would not work: • More workers would move to the informal economy • The costs for consumers and firms are clear but the benefits are hard to prove Urgent economic development comes with a price but is the logical next step for China

  6. LOCAL VIEW • Enviromental impact – Historical context • The trade-offs we face in China • Potencial consequences for the future • Other alternatives?

  7. POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES FOR THE FUTURE • Which would be the possible consequences if we complied with Western enviromental policies? • If nobody follows, we wouldn’t be competitive in China and we should leave the market • If everybody follows: • China is not as attractive for foreign trade as before • Consumers are worse-off because they have to pay higher prices • Black markets grow and therefore instability • Sustainable economic growth is not longer possible • Everybody loses If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!!

  8. LOCAL VIEW • Enviromental impact – Historical context • The trade-offs we face in China • Potencial consequences for the future • Other alternatives?

  9. OTHER ALTERNATIVES? Progressive/adapted enviromental policies? Fund for foreign sustainable development aid? Asian environmental policy agreement? Other ideas?
