  1. GEOSS Evolve Initiative Progress and Next Steps GEO Data Technology Workshop Ivan DeLoatch, Max Craglia, Stefano Nativi April, 22, 2019 / Vienna, Austria

  2. GEOSS EVOLVE 1. Background on Initiative 2. Priority Actions 3. Work Packages and Structure 4. Accomplishments 5. Next Steps • “Towards a user driven GEOSS”

  3. GEOSS EVOLVE Background: The Need to Evolve GEOSS • GEO has devoted considerable efforts to building the GEOSS infrastructure and capabilities that have made Earth observations discoverable. • To continue leveraging these successes to 2025, GEO will evolve GEOSS and its infrastructures to meet current and emerging needs. • “Towards a user driven GEOSS”

  4. GEOSS EVOLVE Background: GEOSS Evolve strategic actions to meet the 2025 Vision. • Extend User Audience • Additional Focus on Access and Use • Enhance Predictive Capabilities • Service framework for partners and user communities • Evolve Current System of Systems • “Towards a user driven GEOSS”

  5. GEOSS EVOLVE Background: Structure and Work Packages Established in 2016 • GEO Secretariat • Secretarial support • Coordination with GEOSS Platform Operations FT and User Requirements FT • “Towards a user driven GEOSS”

  6. GEOSS-EVOLVE Accomplishments: Engaging decision makers, providers, users… Pilots, Use Cases, Supporting Flagships, Initiatives & Communities Data Provider Workshops 2016 - 2019 Improving Data Management and use of Interoperability Standards • Regional hubs • Flagships • Initiatives • Data Management Principles • Standards • Training • “Towards a user driven GEOSS”

  7. GEOSS-EVOLVE Accomplishments: Developed GEOSS Conceptual Architecture. GEOSS Platform • “Towards a user driven GEOSS”

  8. GEOSS-EVOLVE Accomplishments: Exploring models to Advance the GEOSS Concept Architecture. Legend • “Towards a user driven GEOSS”

  9. GEOSS-EVOLVE Accomplishments: Exploring models to Advance the GEOSS Concept Architecture. Legend Combined centre+ regions ensuring interoperability and sharing principles agreed in GEO Strategic Plan • “Towards a user driven GEOSS”

  10. Users • (Applications, Services, Systems, …) GEOSS-EVOLVE Platform Components Accomplishments: Evolving the GEOSS Infrastructure and Portal into a Platform. • GEOSS through its GEOSS Platform (former GCI) proactively linkstogether existing and planned observing systems around the world and supports the need for the development of new systems where gaps currently exist. • EO Resources • (Data, Information, Knowledge, Services, Systems, …) • “Towards a user driven GEOSS”

  11. GEOSS-EVOLVE Next steps: for GEOSS Evolve––transition to new structure. DRAFT • A proposal is underway to simplify the structure of foundational tasks to improve planning, implementation, coordination, and support to in the GEO Community. • As a result GEOSS Evolve will be transitioned and aligned under the new task structure of the work programme. • “Towards a user driven GEOSS”

  12. GEOSS-EVOLVE Next steps: for GEOSS Evolve––transition to new structure. • Advance the evolution of the GEOSS Platform architecture, based on: • analysis of the evolving landscape of information technology, • changing patterns of production and use of Earth observation products and services, • and the specific user requirements expressed by GEO Flagships, Regional GEOs and Initiatives • “Towards a user driven GEOSS”

  13. GEOSS-EVOLVE Next steps: Main actions would include the following: • Design the implementation architecture of the evolved GEOSS Platform. • Develop and test new GEOSS Platform functionalities, solutions and components (to address the new architecture), engaging the GEO Community. • Prepare documentation and training materials describing the new components and solutions. • Ensure synergy and interoperability of the Regional GEO Infrastructures GEOSS Platform • “Towards a user driven GEOSS”

  14. GEOSS Evolve Initiative Thank You for Your Attention GEO Data Technology Workshop Ivan DeLoatch, Max Craglia, Stefano Nativi / April, 22, 2019 / Vienna, Austria • “Towards a user driven GEOSS”
