  1. Cast Shadow Case Studies – 13 Slides .

  2. My Current Style: My current style is to shoot ‘found objects or situations’ using mostly existing light. It does not allow for the kind of control that I exercised as a studio photographer doing advertising photography in Los Angeles. Cast Shadow: Case study

  3. Relight with Photoshop: I used the traditional ‘dodge & burn’ technique when I started using Photoshop over 18 years ago. ‘Burn’ refers to darkening areas of an image as a standard part of a traditional darkroom work. That darkening evolved into creating a ‘cast shadow’ affect about 10 years ago. Cast Shadow: Case study

  4. Example: Image Another manhole cover ‘find’ with very interesting relief texture and text. The camera was rotated to maximize the design potential of the composition. This example image is already lab worked with Levels, Bri/Cont, and Color layer ‘filter’ adjustments Cast Shadow: Case study

  5. Example: Advanced lab work In an attempt to add more depth to the image, I added a cast shadow using the ‘K’ shape as a guide. It worked but… Cast Shadow: Case study

  6. Example: Last move… Once the cast shadow was added, it allowed me to kick up the highlights for the final punch… Cast Shadow: Case study

  7. Transformation: From a flat texture shot to an interesting Thing or even a Place shot… Case Study

  8. Details: Here is the camera original with the Histogram overlaid on top. And a full size detail section as shown below. Fully processed (punchy) Cast Shadow: Case study Camera original (flat)

  9. EXIF and more: Facts Aperture F/8 (fully stopped-down) Exposure Time 1/500 Exposure Bias - 0.66 Focal Length 120mm equivalent Light Source Direct sunlight Taken Date 5/1/09 @ 2:45 PM Cast Shadow: Case study

  10. Modern Menorah: Wonderful slumped and fused glass menorah found in a shop window in the University Village. I actually camera cropped too close to tell the menorah Thing story. I am actually telling a beautiful glass, texture and color story… Color, Cropping, and Presence: Case study

  11. Beautiful Glass: Cropping tighter to tell a more focused story about the beautiful Thing. I am also using the glass, texture, and colors to show ‘drawing with light’…. Color, Cropping, and Presence: Case study

  12. Beautiful Thing: Shot Case Study

  13. Summary: Once the cast shadow was added, it allowed me to kick up the highlights for the final punch… Cast Shadow: Case study
