CURRENT EVENTS APRIL 25 BENTLEY GENERALS CAPTURE THE ALLAN CUP • The Bentley Generals shut out the Clarenville Caribous in the 2013 Allan Cup finals on Saturday night in Red Deer, Alta., taking the championship with a 3-0 victory. • The Allan Cup represents senior men's AAA hockey supremacy in Canadaand had been competed for since 1909 • Bentley played the role of the host team for this year’s addition • Chris Neiszner scored the first goal of the game 14 minutes into the second period, followed by another goal by Scott Doucet four minutes later. • Kennan Desmont rounded out the scoring in the third period, while goaltender Dan Bakala stopped all 35 shots on the Bentley net.

CURRENT EVENTS APRIL 25 • Since 2008, the Generals have appeared in the final five times winning twice • The Generals, who won the Allan Cup in 2009, lost to the Caribous 5-3 in the 2011 final. • Bentley made a coaching change during the off season letting go former Jack Adams winner Brian Sutter who had coached the 2009 team, for rookie head coach Brandin Cote a former Generals player with no head coaching experience The original Cup has been retired to the Hockey Hall of Fame, and a replica is presented to the champions.

CURRENT EVENTS APRIL 25 U.S. BORDER FEE PROPOSAL TO BE 'VIGOROUSLY' FOUGHT BY OTTAWA • The Department of Homeland Security wants Congress to authorize the study of a fee that could be collected from everyone who enters the U.S. at land crossings bordering Canada and Mexico. • Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade thinks a fee to simply enter the U.S. would be bad for business between the two countries. • Canadian officials will vigorously lobby against this proposal," department spokeswoman Emma Welford told CBC News in an email. • "We believe that any fee on travelers crossing the Canada-U.S. border would be bad for travellers and bad for the economy," . • Welford said Canadians spend more than $21 billion annually in the U.S.

CURRENT EVENTS APRIL 25 • Matt Marchand, president of Windsor Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce, also dislikes the proposal. • Marchandsays 80 per cent of Ontario’s exports go to the U.S. and that 32 U.S. states name Canada as their top destination for exports. • The 2014 Department of Homeland Security budget proposal seeks increases in existing fees charged for services, including fees that air and sea travellers must pay when they enter the country. • the agency also wants to study the feasibility of collecting a land border crossing fee for pedestrians and passenger vehicles along the northern and southwest borders of the United States. • http://www.cbc.ca/player/News/ID/2381125948/

CURRENT EVENTS APRIL 25 ORGAN TRANSPLANT PROGRAM EXPECTED TO BOOST SUCCESS RATE • Organ transplant rates in Canada will improve thanks to a new national research program based at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, says the lead scientist. • "There are 4,500 Canadians waiting for transplants right now … and they face a 30 to 40 per cent risk of not ever getting a transplant," said Dr. Lori West, a clinician scientist at the University of Alberta. "Canada lags behind." • The program will involve 105 investigators and 86 collaborators at 13 centres and universities across the country. • The most difficult obstacles for successful transplants is the lack of access to organs and the failure of that organ in the years following the operation, she said.
