  3. Background & Introductions • Over 25 years combined at the NCAA national office. • Started Forward Progress in 2013. • Why UNF?

  4. APR 101 • Points awarded for eligibility/graduation and retention. • Totaled over most recent four years (cohort). • Used in analysis for eligibility for postseason competition, APP penalties and public recognition of top academically performing teams (coming soon: Revenue Distribution) • Who can tell me the current APR of their team?

  5. APR Calculation APR Calculation: • Two available points each academic term. • Eligibility "E" point = student-athlete meets academic eligibility standards as of the end of the academic term. • Retention "R" point = student-athlete is enrolled full time as of the fifth week of classes of the next term. Number of points earned Number of points possible x 1000 = APR

  6. APR Example 13 Student-Athletes on Scholarship • 9 complete the 2015-16 year eligible and return/graduate (36/36) • 1 ineligible after spring 2016, but returns (3/4) • 1 transfers to a 2-year school with a 3.0 after spring 2016 (3/4) • 1 transfers immediately to a four-year school with a 2.9 GPA (3/3) • 1 goes professional and does not complete the spring semester (2/4) APR: 47 Points Earned 51 Points Possible 921.5

APR Submission & Adjustments • APR submitted each fall semester, reflecting the outcomes of the previous year. • Allowed to request adjustments (2.6 transfer, pro departure). • Don’t get comfortable. • Mitigating circumstances. • Work with Compliance/Academics • “You Miss 100% of the Shots You Don’t Take” • Delayed Graduation Points

  9. 2016-17 Post Season Penalties Q: In the past three years, how many teams have been declared ineligible for post season play due to APR? A: 23 teams in 16-17 23 teams in 15-16 42 teams in 14-15

  10. Post-season Waiver Standards First Occasion: Extraordinary Mitigating Circumstances: clearly out of the control of the institution, the athletics department and the team's student-athletes. Second Occasion and Beyond: With improvement and other factors present, the level of mitigation required to receive relief is less stringent than first occasion.

  11. APR Next Steps • 2015-16 has been submitted, and will be released to public on May 10th (May 3rd for Top 10%). • Individual team meetings. • Adjustment Submissions • Academic-Based Revenue Distribution (APR/GSR, FGR vs. student body).

Academic-Based Revenue Distribution Three Ways to Earn Distribution: • Earn an overall, single-year, all-sport Academic Progress Rate of 985 or higher • Earn an overall all-sport Graduation Success Rate of 90 percent • Earn a federal graduation rate that is at least 13 percentage points higher than the federal graduation rate of the student body at that school
