A Tale of Two Blogospheres: Analyzing Discursive Practices in U.S. Political Blogs

This study compares the discursive practices of top U.S. political blogs on the left and right during the summer of 2008. By analyzing 155 blogs, it examines the accessibility of content, the boundaries between elite and user-generated content, participation features, and prevalent content styles. The findings reveal significant differences in how blogs represent and shape political discourse and democratic engagement across ideological lines. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for comprehending the impact of the Internet on democracy and knowledge production.

Sample Selection • A URL had to • 1. appear on at least four of the seven lists of top blogs (or at least five of the seven lists, for the top 65 blogs in our study), • 2. show signs of active posting and/or commenting within the 30 days prior to our coding, • 3. contain content that predominantly and/or consistently addressed U.S. political issues, and • 4. contain at least one page visible from the listed URL labeled or described as a “blog.”
