Dr. Stuart Brand : Level 4 Course Director. • Primarily responsible for academic matters; • Member of Departmental Education Committee (EC); • Chairs occasional meetings of L4 teaching staff; Adrian Skelton : Teaching administrator. • Manages the M.Phys. Projects; • Administration of weekly problems etc……….. Dr. Chris Maxwell : Natural Sciences Liaison Officer. • Co-ordination of Physics aspects of Nats. Sci. degree; STAFF WITH SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES RE. L4

Physics Department modules available at L4 PHYS4121 Atoms, Lasers and Qubits PHYS4151 Advanced Condensed Matter Physics PHYS4141 Advanced Theoretical Physics (MPhys students cannot take PHYS4181 Particle Theory both of these modules) PHYS4161Advanced Astrophysics (MPhys students cannot take PHYS4201Theoretical Astrophysics both of these modules) PHYS4221 Advanced Physics 4 PHYS4231 Planets and Cosmology 4 PHYS4241 Theoretical Physics 4 + Nat. Sci. - Foundations 4A/B PHYS4251/4261www All MPhys(F301) www MPhys Theoretical Physics(F344) www MPhys Physics and Astronomy(FF3N) www students must do PHYS4213 Project

  4. 3 single lecture modules : choose what is appropriate for you given your interests and allocated project. NB AdvP.4 (PHYS4221), Th.Phys.4 (PHYS4241) & Plan.&Cos. 4 (PHYS4231), PHYS4251/61 (Foundations 4A/4B) are essentially L3 modules : • Can only be taken if not already done at L3 (PHYS3641, PHYS3651, PHYS3661, PHYS3621 and PHYS3631 respectively )! • differ from L3 versions in that an essay is also required which counts for 20% of the module mark. This is assessed via a 1 hour open-book exam., currently scheduled to take place in week 6 of the Epiphany term. LEVEL 4 COURSE MODULES : 1 X Project Module : PHYS4213 (triple module) 50 % Year mark - Major difference to Levels 1 – 3 SEE PROJECT SUPERVISOR BEFORE YOU LEAVE!

  5. Project Assessment : Four components • Report mark - main component. • Supervisor’s mark – diligence, initiative etc. • Oral examination mark. • Seminar mark.

  7. REGISTRATION PROCEDURE Make sure that you enter your module choices online – the deadline for module selections is Friday, June 27th. Academic Advisers should be available in the week beginning Monday, 23rd June if you wish to make an appointment to discuss your study options. Dr. Maxwell should be available for Nat. Sci. student consultation on Thursday, June 26th. Make sure that you have completed and signed the plagiarism form – note that copying verbatimfrom anywhere without proper reference is plagiarism and will land you in trouble! Including material from elsewhere is ok providing it is properly referenced, inside quotation marks and preferably in italics.
