In 2001 Chalmers University of Technology and Göteborg University started a co-operation platform for sustainable development and environmental research - the GMV Centre for Environment and Sustainability. GMV sprung out of the former environmental, co-operation organisation "the School of Environmental Science" started in the early nineties. GMV involves all faculties and departments at both universities as it is now widely realized that co-operation between different research areas is needed for universities seeking to contribute to sustainable development. Traditionally, however, it has been difficult to put interdisciplinary ideas into practice. Through the Centre for Environment and Sustainability, GMV, in Göteborg that initial threshold has been overcome. At both universities GMV is a centre that operates directly under the President/vice Chancellors function.
