Enhancing Collaboration in European Earth System Models (ESMs) Development

This initiative aims to strengthen collaboration among various climate research groups in Europe developing Earth System Models (ESMs) such as CERFACS, CNRS-IPSL, and MetOffice. By establishing networks for expertise sharing around ESMs, we can leverage collective scientific and technical advancements. Key tasks include coordinating work packages, creating comprehensive ESM documentation, and networking on tools like OASIS and CDO. The project will facilitate knowledge sharing and user support through meetings and dedicated websites, enhancing the functionality and collaboration in ESM development.

  1. Partners and general objectives • In Europe, different ESMs are being developed by different climate research groups: CERFACS (48), CNRS-IPSL (43), MF (3), MPG (22), MetOffice (6), SMHI (3), KNMI (3), CMCC (4) • Strengthening the interactions between those groups so they can share their scientific and technical experience • Establishing a network of expertise around ESMs and their technical environment • Benefits will be leveraged by associated services provided through the v.E.R.C. IS-ENES kick-off meeting – March 30-31, Paris

  2. Tasks • Task 0: Work package coordination • Task 1: ESM documentation: • mo 12: ESMs current documentation, incl. description of associated tools and specific “assembling guide” (User Guide). • mo 18: ESM documentation following a subset of CIM metadata. • mo 36: ESM revised documentation following the full CIM metadata. • Task 2: Networking on common tools and components (OASIS, CDO, NEMO) • mo 24: OASIS complete web site accessible via v.E.R.C. • mo 24: CDO complete web site accessible via v.E.R.C. • mo 24: web NEMO configurations database filled up by NEMO team • mo 48: general coupled model assembling guide based on practical experience • mo 48: web NEMO configurations database filled up by NEMO team and partners IS-ENES kick-off meeting – March 30-31, Paris

  3. First actions • ESM documentation: • Groups should get ready to provide documentation & User Guide for month 12 • For CIM documentation (mo 18), close contact with METAFOR is needed. • ARPEGE-NEMO as beta test for the CIM (MF-CNRM & CERFACS) • Other WP4 partners could/should volunteer to be CIM beta testers • Networking on OASIS • OASIS User meeting, May 25-26, CERFACS, Toulouse • registrations now open on IS-ENES web site! • OASIS Dedicated User Support • First Call for applicants in April-May 2009 • OASIS web site • Networking on CDO: • CDO web site • Networking on NEMO • NEMO configurations database IS-ENES kick-off meeting – March 30-31, Paris
