Air quality-related responsibilities: • Management of air quality in Greater Vancouver • air quality planning • monitoring and public information • data analysis and reporting • regulations of ICI emission sources • Regional development • Livable Region Strategic Plan • Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority • Partnerships in Shared Airshed

  3. The New Air Quality Management Plan Vision: Clean and healthy air for current and future generations Goals: • Minimize the risk to public health from air pollution • Improve visibility • Minimize Greater Vancouver’s contribution to global climate change

  4. AQMP Strategies • Reduce emissions from major regional sources • Marine sources • Cars, trucks and buses • Construction, rail and agricultural equipment • Industrial, commercial and institutional sources • Communities (e.g., space heating) • Agriculture • Develop and implement local air quality management programs • Enhance air quality information and public awareness

  5. AQMP Emission Reductions With implementation of the AQMP: • particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) • sulphur oxides • nitrogen oxides • volatile organic compounds • carbon monoxide But… • greenhouse gases

Partnerships • Federal Governments(Environment Canada, US EPA Region 10) • Provincial/State Governments(BC Environment, Washington State Department of Ecology, BC Health) • Local Jurisdictions(Fraser Valley Regional District, Municipalities, Northwest Clean Air Agency) • Industry (Vancouver Port Authority, Canadian Petroleum Products Institute, BC Hydro) • Non-Government Organizations (BC Lung Association, UBC)
