    1. The Start of World War I

    2. Things to remember World War I does not involve Nazis. World War I does not involve Hitler. World War I does not involve the holocaust. World War I does not involve Pearl Harbor. World War I does not involve Normandy. World War I and World War II are related to each other, we will cover that in the peace agreement after World War I and the beginning to World War II.

    3. World War I changed the world. 9 million dead Remaining empires, like Ottoman Empire, are destroyed. New technologies change warfare for the rest of history. A new idea: Total War

    4. The Alliances The Triple Alliance a.k.a. The Central Powers: Germany, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Italy Italy backed out of alliance at start of WW I The Triple Entente a.k.a. The Allies U.K., France, Russia

    5. The Black Hand The government of Serbia supported this terrorist group. Serbia had problems with the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Seven assassins sent to assassinate the heir to the throne of the A-H Empire—Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Gavrillo Princip kills Ferdinand and wife (pictured) 6/28/1914.

    6. Austro-Hungarian Empire’s Response Takes three weeks to respond. Offers ultimatum to Serbia—48 hours to accept responsibility or face war. Germany agrees to back up Austria—long established alliance. Austria ONLY want to go to war against Serbia.

    7. Serbia’s Response Accepts most of ultimatum, but not all. Austro-Hungarian Empire declares war. July 28, 1914 July 29th: Russia authorizes partial mobilization of troops along western border. Careful not to threaten Germany.

    8. Russia moves July 30th Russia orders full mobilization. Terrible mobilization. Russia still industrially underdeveloped. Germany demands Russia to stop mobilizing. Russian mobilization ruins the Schlieffen Plan. Plan made in 1905 by Germans to attack France and Russia.

    9. Germany’s response Germany declares war on Russia. August 1st 1914 Can’t wait for diplomacy, Schlieffen Plan requires immediate action! Germany Enacts Schlieffen Plan. August 3rd 1914 Invades Belgium Declares war on France

    10. Britain’s response Britain declares war on Germany August 4, 1914

    11. Everybody loves war…right? War was tremendously supported in ALL European countries. Everybody thought the war would be over by Christmas 1914. All countries eager to “try on” industrial revolution technologies in war.

    12. Failure of the Schlieffen Plan Germans make it all the way to only 30 minutes outside of Paris in the north. Lead to trench warfare. Became very long and drawn out war with new deadly technologies.
