  19. Change of clothes Train your voice Dress well Know subjects as well as possible Know school procedures Skip the coffee Make your own hall pass Have a backup plan: Substitute package Activities Books Games Worksheets Be prepared!

  20. What to do: • Visit schools • Meet the principal • Leave your “business card” • Ask for a substitute packet • Ask for a name of an individual you can “turn to” for help • Associate with other teachers in the building (if you want to return)

  21. Summary • At first, accept ANY substitute position. • Then, decide what areas you feel more comfortable to teach. • Remember, principals are mainly looking for good classroom management and if you are “flexible.” • Teachers are looking for good discipline as well as completing lesson plans and even grading papers.

  22. Where to Get More Information • Contact the board of education in the county or school division you would like to substitute • Go to the state department of education websites to obtain information concerning substitutes/teaching positions • Dr. Trull’s website for further informaiton (faculty.concord.edu/ctrull).

  23. More Information • You may apply in more than one county • Some counties in southern WV will allow you to substitute teach before receiving certification (contact Carolyn Cox for a letter indicating completion of your degree) • Others may not due to the background check requirement • Certification will not be assigned for approximately 3-4 weeks after graduation • Check the WVDE website to determine status

  24. Congratulations and Good Luck in your future endeavors!
