Different Pathways and Schools • Work • Military • Apprenticeships: “Earn while you learn” • Electrician, plumber, HVAC, cosmetology • Learn more about apprenticeships in this link • Find apprenticeships in CA in this link • Trade School/Vocational School: • more classroom-based than apprenticeship, usually higher cost • e.g. Wyotech, Carrington, Academy of Art, FIDM, Paul Mitchell • College • 2-year • 4-year

Community Colleges • Open admissions • Less expensive for general ed classes • Smaller class sizes • Associate’s Degree/Certificate Programs • Doesn’t require SAT/ACT • Easier to get in to CSU or UC as junior transfer • Transfer options with UCs, CSUs, private, out-of-state • Not the typical “college experience”

Transferring to a 4-Year • Recommend following 4-year college reqs in high school • Consider taking math in 12th grade • Must have at least 60 units (combination of GE and some lower division major courses) • Out-of-state universities often require fewer units to transfer • Follow IGETC for general ed • Apply as a community college sophomore • Colleges look only at CC grades • University diploma is the same, does not mention CC • Start taking classes now through concurrent enrollment • Talk to your counselor about application process

Applying from High School • Application opens August 1st • Can submit starting Oct. 1 for CSU, Nov. 1 for UC, deadline Nov. 30 for CSU and UC • Don’t rush to submit, no priority given for submitting before Nov. 30 • We are here to help: • Attend Senior Information Night in Sept. • College App Workshops every Weds. in Oct./Nov. • Personal Insight/Essay Workshop in Oct.

Tips • ENJOY YOUR SUMMER! • If you want to start college apps: • Come up with ideas for responding to UC Personal Insight Questions and/or private university essays: Link to UC • Work on your resume or “brag sheet”: Link to Brag Sheet • Create your MY UC Account, get familiar with the application, fill in personal information
