Science Modular exams • You have completed 6 modular exams • These are worth 75% of your year 10 Core science GCSE (you have been re-sitting these in Year 11) • The other 25% of your grade comes from your year 10 ISA coursework If your grade is still not high enough you have one last chance to re-sit these modular exams in June!

  2. Science Exam in June • 3 x 45 minute papers • 1x Biology, Chemistry, Physics • Each paper is worth 25% of your final grade. • The other 25% comes from your year 11 ISA coursework

  3. What are the important pieces of information on the front page of the exam paper? Task: Circle or underline the most important points

  6. There are 4 crucial areas of exam technique for the science papers • Time management • Marks for a question • Key Formulas • Key words • Using what they give you • Answering the question

  7. 1. Time management How many marks on the paper? 45 marks 45 mins How much time do you have? So you should aiming to get 1 mark every minute How many questions on the paper? 7 7 How many marks for a question? 3-7 marks Obviously you should spend longer on the higher mark questions

  8. Scenario 1 • Question 3 on your chemistry exam paper is on electrolysis, a topic you find really hard! • You reckon you can do the question but it will take you about 10 minutes. What do you do?

  10. How many marks do you think this student got? A In the year 1800 there were lots of men, women and children and their dogs living in houses in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Today in 2008 there are 60 million people living in the United Kingdom of Great Britain which is a lot more than in 1800. If there are more people living in Britain we need more food around.

  14. Easiest mark on this question is the last one! Don’t give up at start of question • Scenario 2 • Question 7 on your chemistry exam paper is on calculations, you read part a and b and can’t even attempt to write anything. What do you do next?

  15. 3. Key Formulas • Scenario 2 • Question 1 on your physics exam paper is about momentum • You can’t remember the formula for working out momentum, what do you do?

  16. Key Formulas You will be given all the formulas you need to answer physics questions, you just need to look for them!

  17. Key definitions You will need to learn key definitions though; RAM Mass number Mole Isotope RFM Atomic number Isotope Ion

  18. 4. Key words By highlighting key words you can focus your attention on the facts! 5. Using what they give you They often give you the answer in the question you just have to find it! Eg Question i.

Answering the question Read the question properly before answering, or this can happen…. • Higher temperature makes chemicals move faster • Lower temperature makes chemicals move slower • A higher concentration of chemicals can mean more particles to react so reaction is faster • A catalyst can also speed up a reaction
