Why are human resources in banking important? • The greatest asset of any bank is their people. • Human Resources help: • Find the right people • Provide for all their personnel-related needs • Offer training opportunities at all levels • Deal with industry wide issues • Human resources help create a great workforce for banks through the management of the employees.

Hiring/Recruiting • Smaller banks don’t like hiring college graduates at entry level positions • High turnover • Training of many employees • Often they’ll hire those who have already received their training from a larger bank. • Hired for probationary time. • Larger banks are more apt to hire college graduates: • Campus recruiting • 60% of management comes from within the company.

Equal Employment Opportunity • Civil Rights Act of 1964 • No discrimination based on race, sex, or religion • Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972 • Gave the EEOC authority to conduct its own enforcement litigation • Equal Pay Act • Protects against sex-based wage discrimination • Other acts include: disabilities act, age discrimination act, and the rehabilitation act.

Working at a Bank • Change in lower positions from full time to part time • Added flexibility • Technology makes jobs like teller much easier and quicker • Access to manage account online • Compensation / Benefits • No set standard - Varies from bank to bank • This is how banks attract, retain, and reward employees • Skills needed: • Attention to detail, communication, organization, etc. • Main requirement is INTEGRITY

  6. Working at a Bank (cont.) • Those convicted of felony can’t work at banks. • Upon entering employment the bank can legally do a background check, take your fingerprint, and do a drug screen testing • Certification is available • Online Teller Certification
