Hydrogeologic Framework Discussions of the Floridan Aquifer System In Brooksville, FL 4/21/2011
Today’s Agenda • Morning: I tell you what I know • Introduction (this presentation) • Middle Confining Units of the Floridan Aquifer System (probably more than you want to know) • Hydrogeologic Framework for Northeastern Florida and Southeastern Georgia • Hydrogeologic Discussion of Southwest and Central Florida and Tie-In to the South Florida Area • Afternoon: exchange of ideas
Project Background • One of several current ongoing studies being conducted by the USGS Groundwater Resource Program (GWRP) • Began in Fall of 2009 • Project team members located across Southeastern U.S. • Several previous meetings have been held between USGS and local districts and states to keep you apprised of developments and important results
Framework Revision RASA Framework • Focus on improving the physical geometry and understanding of the hydraulic properties of the system • Improve understanding of flow system needed to build numerical model • Active surficial • Salt-water encroachment 6 to 8 yrs New Framework 2 yrs
Floridan Framework (our focus) Stratigraphy Aquifers and Confining Units Surficial Aquifer Upper Confining Unit** Floridan Aquifer System Extent* Top of System* Upper Floridan* Middle Confining Unit** Lower Floridan* Lower Confinement • Cretaceous System • Tertiary System • Paleocene Series • Eocene Series • Oligocene Series • Miocene Series • Post Miocene Will not be revised *Minor revision **Major revision
Revised Hydrogeologic Framework Major Update • Middle confining units • Extent of each one • Configuration of top • Thickness of units • High T Zones • APPZ, FPZ, BZ • Location of freshwater/saltwater Interface
Planned Products • Hydrogeologic Framework for the Floridan Aquifer System (Draft by Fall 2011) • Digital Structural Surfaces for the Floridan Aquifer System (follows main report) • Borehole geophysical logs used for the Floridan and Saline Mapping studies
Getting feedback from you early • Very interested in what you think • Getting an exchange of ideas now is a lot better than waiting for a report to be published and then getting it • Do you have any new data that needs to be incorporated that is not yet out on the street? lesterw@usgs.gov
