  3. 1. Project Background In collaboration with: • John Samuel and Associates • Citizens for Public Justice • Canadian Ethnocultural Council Funded by: • Welcoming Communities Initiative, Citizenship and Immigration Canada

  4. 2. Purpose To prepare an anti-racism tool in the form of an inventory of resources on racism and anti-racism in Canada, including: • Dynamic (online) database expandable and searchable by various criteria

  5. 2. Purpose • Static (online and print) listing organized by focus areas (categories) In support of the settlement, adaptation, and integration of newcomers (immigrants and refugees) to Canada

  6. 3. Target Population • Service Providers (agencies and their staff) helping newcomers settle, adapt, and integrate into Canadian society

  7. 3. Target Population • Other (civil society and government) Agencies and Individuals involved in: • Broader anti-racism work • Efforts to create a welcoming environment for newcomers in local Canadian communities

  8. 4. Scope of Resources Racism and related forms of discrimination faced by newcomers to Canada How to counter these forms of discrimination in different spaces and jurisdictions

  9. 5. Focus Areas Twelve focus areas (categories) are identified to collect resources: • Historical Background (evolution of racism and anti-racism in Canada) • Attitudes held by “mainstream” Canadians towards people of immigrant and/or “visible minority” background

Focus Areas • Racial Profiling by various institutions, including the media, the school system, and the police • Economic Barriers, including non-recognition of internationally earned human capital (credentials, skills, and experience), un- or under-employment, discrimination in the workplace, and poverty

  11. 5. Focus Areas • Ethno-Cultural Community Profiles • Immigrants’ Contribution to Canada • Community Capacity Building by service providers and local/ethno-cultural/immigrant communities themselves

  12. 5. Focus Areas Cross-Cultural Understanding Anti-Racism Education, including training on indices or indicators of racism

  13. 5. Focus Areas Good Practices in the struggle against racism and for inclusive communities, including programs and services Anti-Racism Policies by all three levels of government

  14. 5. Focus Areas Legal Framework (municipal, provincial/territorial, and federal legislation concerning human rights, equity, and related issues)

  18. 7. Presentation of Information The online database presents up to 11 pieces of information about a particular resource : • Category • Type

  19. 7. Presentation of Information • Title (hyperlinked if there is an associated URL) • Author (individual or institutional) • Place (city and province/territory/state or, in a few cases where the resource originates from outside Canada and the United States, country)

  21. 7. Presentation of Information Language (if applicable, second and/or third languages are hyperlinked to access the resource in those languages) Contact information (including such details as mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address) Abstract

  22. 8. Database Search Criteria With 220 resources at the present time, the online database can be searched by eight criteria: Category (a particular resource is classified under up to three categories)

  24. 9. Feedback We are aware that there are more resources out there than we could include in this inventory and that the literature is in constant growth
