Transforming Delivery E-Learning for RTO’s What’s in it for you
Integracom eLearning:A brief history • 2008 • Investigating moodle • Setup first Moodle server, a 'leftover' PC. • Installed and configured Moodle to run on our LAN only. • Attended introductory Moodle training at Westone. • Trialled moodle for online assessments in our computer training rooms
Integracom eLearning:A brief history • 2009 • Obtained Innovations funding via AFLF to develop eLearning with a focus on increasing uptake of eLearning by Learners at Integracom • Produced learning object for LORN as output from 2009 funded project • Presented report on 2009 project to 'Online09' conference.
Integracom eLearning:A brief history • 2009 • Won tender to produce questions for question bank for online assessment of Digital Reception Technologies courses for Australian Govt. (Dept of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy) Endorsed Installer Program for Digital TV Switchover.
Integracom eLearning:A brief history • 2010 • Registered web-learning.com.au • Obtained Innovations funding via AFLF to develop Network Simulator for teaching fundamentals of computer networking. • Produced output of Network Simulator as part of 2010 funded project • Presented report on 2010 project to ‘TEAM10' conference.
The 2010 Network Simulator Project:A (brief) case study in funded projects • Funded via the Australian Flexible Learning Framework E-learning Innovations Program
The 2010 Network Simulator Project • Integracom teaches introductory IP Networking as part of a Certificate III in Telecommunications
The Existing Training Method • Learners are taught about networking configurations in a traditional computer classroom setting including practical exercises using physical networking equipment
The Existing Training Method • This takes time, and limits the number of networking scenarios that a learner can be presented with.
Transforming training for distant or remote Learners • The training course is ideal for e-learning, except for one thing…
Transforming training for distant or remote Learners • If a remote Learner attempted to complete the practical exercises by changing network settings on their own computer, they would lose their connection to the LMS. ???
The Solution • Virtualise practical exercises using a simulated network environment
Options • Learners can still attend face-to-face training where practical exercises can be carried out in virtual environment.
Learner Exercises • Learners can be presented with network scenarios with objectives to complete
Objectives • The scenario can be ‘run’ and the Learner can quickly see if they have achieved the objectives.
Deployment • Virtual Network Simulator can be embedded into LMS’s such as Moodle.
Reporting • The objectives can then be reported to an LMS via a SCORM compliant output
Storing Results • Exercise results can be recorded and stored in an LMS
Evidence of Competency? • Scenarios can be constructed by an Instructor to assess a Leaner’s skill and understanding of specific networking tasks.
Evidence of Competency? • If a Learner completes these tasks under the observation of an assessor, why not use it for gathering evidence of competency?
Network Simulator • Time for a demonstration...
2010 Continued... • Built and hosted our own Moodle web-servers in-house at Integracom • Conversion of existing course materials into moodle • Telecommunications training manuals as used by TAFEs across Australia and in our training centre. • Assessments converted to multiple choice for ease of delivery of exams • Creation of SCORM based learning objects from PowerPoint presentations to track Learner participation throughout online course completion.
2010 Continued... • Created offline eLearning (html based) system to run from CD for Australian Govt. (Dept of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy) Endorsed (Digital Reception Technologies) program using Adobe Captivate, Dreamweaver and CD Autorun programs.
2011 and Beyond • Assessments now conducted online for 24 National Competency Units • Course theory delivery of 19 National Competency Units
E-Assessment • Purchased 32 iPads (WiFi only) for Online Assessments, connected via internet to our Moodle server in Perth • 16 to keep in Perth, 16 for interstate courses
E-Assessment: Benefits to Learners • No long, written, paper-based assessments • Instant feedback of exam mark • Increased use of pictures to compliment text for inclusion of visual learning styles
E-Assessment: Benefits to RTO’s • Streamline Marking Procedures • 12 Learners per class x 10 Competencies per week x 5 weeks of training = 600 exam papers = (at 20 mins each) 200 hours that the Instructor did not have to use for marking!

The potential... World Domination
Conclusion • E-Learning may seem daunting to begin with, but the benefits outweigh the one-off effort required. • E-Learning helped Integracom increase its student base. • E-Learning provides opportunities to provide broader training for projects, e.g. NBN (30,000 + technicians required) • E-Learning has enabled Integracom, a West Australian Private RTO, to expand training provision nationally.
Now the question is.... What will E-Learning do for you?
