  1. ANIMAL CELL

  2. CELL MEMBRANE STRUCTURE FUNCTION Holds contents of cell inside (like skin) Keeps harmful substances out Controls what enters and leaves Water, oxygen, and nutrients are allowed to enter Waste products are allowed to exit • Surrounds the cell

  3. CYTOPLASM STRUCTURE FUNCTION Chemical reactions take place here Cytoskeleton in the cytoplasm helps the cell maintain or change its shape (just like your skeleton) • Clear, thick, jelly-like fluid (like Jell-o)

  4. NUCLEUS STRUCTURE FUNCTION Control center- directs all cell activities (like a brain) • Round • Contains the DNA, which is long, thin threads of genetic material

  5. MITOCHONDRIA STRUCTURE FUNCTION Powerhouse of the cell Release chemical energy from food • Bean shaped • Each cell has many mitochondria • More active cells have more than less active cells

  6. VACUOLE STRUCTURE FUNCTION Storage compartment Holds food and water for the cell • Animal cell has many • Small, round

  7. PLANT CELL

  8. CELL WALL STRUCTURE FUNCTION Protects the cell Gives the cell shape (plants do not have a skeleton like animals) • Tough, rigid outer covering (like a wall to a building)

  9. CELL MEMBRANE STRUCTURE FUNCTION Holds contents of cell inside (like skin) Keeps harmful substances out Controls what enters and leaves Water, oxygen, and nutrients are allowed to enter Waste products are allowed to exit • Surrounds the cell • Inside the cell wall

  10. CYTOPLASM STRUCTURE FUNCTION Chemical reactions take place here Cytoskeleton in the cytoplasm helps the cell maintain or change its shape (just like your skeleton) • Clear, thick, jelly-like fluid (like Jell-o)

  11. NUCLEUS STRUCTURE FUNCTION Control center- directs all cell activities (like a brain) • Round • Contains the DNA, which is long, thin threads of genetic material

  12. WATER VACUOLE STRUCTURE FUNCTION Storage compartment Holds water for the cell Helps to support the plant • Plant cell has 1-2 • Very large

  13. CHLOROPLASTS STRUCTURE FUNCTION Photosynthesis- makes food for plants • Green (contains chlorophyll) • Bean shaped

  14. MITOCHONDRIA STRUCTURE FUNCTION Release chemical energy stored from photosynthesis • Bean shaped
