  2. Live Greener NUS Wales (in partnership with TYF) have been awarded a £68,000 contract substantially funded by the Welsh Government and managed through HEFCW for Live Greener – a 12 month project putting Welsh students at the heart of the sustainability agenda.

  7. Why does NUS care?

Live Greener • NUS Wales will be delivering sector-leading greening initiatives Green Impact, Student Switch Off, Blackout and Snap It Off to Wales. • This will not only make measurable differences to institutions, students and the environment, but also save students’ unions & institutions money, make students more employable, and engage more students with their unions.

Green Impact Universities & Colleges • Departmental sustainability accreditation and awards scheme covering the whole sustainability agenda, from carbon and energy reduction to ethical issues such as Fairtrade and human rights • Empowers staff • Creates a greener institution • Students are trained up as auditors (IEMA accredited) – enhancing student employability

  10. Success in 2012 • 54 Institutions taking part • 1001 teams • 38,873 actions • 28,107 as a result of Green Impact • 24 institutions with trained Project Assistants • Over 800 students trained as volunteers and auditors

Success to date • 2012/13 average reduction in electricity usage in halls of 6% across 54 Unis • Saving of over 1,000 tonnes of CO2 • Over £200,000 in electricity expenditure • Over 1,500 photos, 800 attendees at training events, 8,600 students on our Facebook fanpages and over 17,000 entrants to our online climate quiz • Over 22,000 students (17%) signed up as Eco-Power Rangers.

Student Switch Off -Recycling • In 2011/12 we adapted the Student Switch Off model to successfully increase hall recycling rates by an average of 4% (c20tonnes of waste diverted from landfill)! • This includes the promotion of recycling via Eco-Power Rangers, recycling themed photo competitions and analysis of recycling data to add a recycling dimension to the energy competition. • We complete a pre-notified visual waste and recycling audit in halls kitchens. Kitchens segregating their waste correctly will be given Fairtrade chocolate rewards and kitchen-specific feedback will be left using a recycleometer card.

  17. Water • Welsh institutions will be leading the way with a new pilot adapting the successful Student Switch Off methodology of behaviour change to also encourage students to think more sustainably about their water use!

  18. Snap It Off provides an opportunity for students to report lights that are on unnecessarily and feel part of the solution to energy wastage. • When a photo is uploaded, we contact the institution to notify them of the problem and feedback subsequent success to the students. • Students can also win prizes for being the eyes and ears on the ground and reporting problems!

Blackout • A student volunteering project where we provide students with training to conduct an energy audit of campus and turn off non-essential equipment left on overnight/weekends – we then compare pre/post energy usage data to highlight how much money & carbon can be saved by people remembering to think sustainably before leaving.

  21. Timebanking • Time Banking is an effective method of encouraging, monitoring and ultimately rewarding people for their participation and efforts. We will be working with TYF to administer a time-credit system for student volunteers. • Individual students redeeming rewards for local activities and events against their volunteer hours. • The institution with greatest volunteer engagement pro-rata to student numbers across the whole Programme will win a national level reward. • This initiative will allow us to monitor student volunteering hours in a formalised way, and to evaluate the benefits of volunteering for students across the Programme.

Legacy • An engaged, sustainably literate and green-skilled student body. • Embedding positive environmental behaviours that last long after the lifetime of the programme. • Build momentum for environmental engagement and projects on campus. • Wales at the forefront of green student enterprise and student-led sustainable development. • Student Green Fund Wales?
