Reasons why there was so much damage and why so many people died • Armero was built on old mud flows from previous eruptions and was in danger from the volcano • The Lahars moved very quickly and were very powerful so that they destroyed everything • The eruption and lahars happened at night when people were in bed sleeping • The people did not heed the warnings to evacuate from the town and villages earlier that day • Rescue was very difficult with all the roads and bridges damaged or covered in the floods
