URBACT II • European Programme of Territorial Cooperation 2007-2013 • (jointly financed by ERDF and Member States – budget 69 M€ ) • Main objective • To promote Integrated & Sustainable Urban Development • Specific objectives • To facilitate exchange and learning among EU cities • To draw lessons and build knowledge based on cities' experience (capitalization) • To disseminate good practices and lessons learnt • To support policy-makers and practitioners, as well as Managing Authorities of Operational Programmes, to improve policies for sustainable urban development (capacity building) Title of presentation I Tuesday 13 December 2011 I Page 2

Main Challenges • Making sure the transnational exchange activities have an impact on local policies/ practices • Building useful and practical knowledge for the outside world, building on the experience of partner cities  THE URBACT METHOD • 1) Exchange and learning for new policies at local level • 2) Capitalisation • 3) Communication & dissemination

Transnational exchange & learning • Sharing and Learning • Cities learning from one another and supporting one another • Cities drawing lessons and sharing with the « outside world » • Action-oriented Each partner to produce a Local Action Plan LAP to tackle a local challenge and build on Integrated approach • Involving local stakeholders • Each partner to set up & run a Local Support Group • Local Support Group to co-produce Local Action Plan • Involving Managing Authorities of OP Each partner to involve MA in the network activities (esp. at local level) MA to explore possible funding through OP & to exchange with other MA • Support to networks & community of work • Support from experts (Lead experts, them. experts) • Supported by the programme (Secretariat, Thematic Pole managers, ULSG capacity building seminars)

CAPITALISATION • Capitalisation ??? “The production of new practical knowledge, building on existing knowledge/ experience in cities (includes transfer of good practices) with a view to be disseminated to urban practitioners and policy-makers” • Project level - Baseline study (state of the art, partner profiles) - Expert support (esp. Lead expert) - Outputs to build and share knowledge (thematic reports, good practices, policy recommendations, etc.) • Programme level • - Clustering of networks under 3 Thematic poles (3 TP managers) • - Projects working together to share findings and deliver consolidated knowledge on cross-cutting topics • - In 2012, 6 topics identified for capitalisation activities

COMMUNICATION & DISSEMINATION • At project level Each network responsible for Comm° & Dissemination (dedicated work package in phase II) • At programme level • A flagship website, www.urbact.eu, with project mini-sites • Contractual partnerships with National Dissemination Points to disseminate info/ findings in national languages • Social networks: blog, Facebook, Twitter • Publications • Events (2012 URBACT Annual Conference, 3-4 December, Copenhagen)
