Understanding Trophic Levels and the Nitrogen Cycle: A Fun Exploration

This lesson delves into the concept of trophic levels in ecosystems and their representation in pyramid form. Students will gain insight into the nitrogen cycle through engaging activities and a mini-quiz. By connecting biology with music, the lesson incorporates a creative song about nitrogen transformations, including nitrification and denitrification processes. The aim is to deepen understanding of ecological relationships and nutrient cycling while making learning enjoyable and memorable. Students will create nitrogen cycle cards to reinforce their knowledge.

  1. Bellringer: What is a trophic level? How come trophic levels are represented in a pyramid form? Hwk: Nitrogen Cycle Card Study!

  2. Today 4/24/12 • Bellringer • Nitrogen Cycle • Nitrogen Cycle Cards

  3. BUT FIRST…POP MINI QUIZ!

  4. Nitrogen Cycle • “Nitrite That I Used To Know” • By: Mr. P • Music Belongs to: Gotye

  5. Verse 1 • Now and then I think of when we were in decomposers • When we were proteins from plants that died • Nitrification sounded right for me • N-O-2 Negative, Oh me! • Deep in the ground and a choice I still remember

  6. Verse 2 • You can get changed to different types of Nitrogen • Nitrifying bacteria to Nitrate • You’ll be N-O-3; absorbed by plants • Well you could be eaten by pests • But desomposers will bring you back to this step

  7. Chorus • But you were denitrified! • Converted back to Nitrogen Gas all like we were nothing • Didn’t need oxygen but you treat me like decay • From the atmosphere

  8. Still Chorus • No, you didn’t have to leave our hole • Denytrifying bacteria • And then change your level • Guess your diatomic now • Now you’re just a nitrite that I used to know (x3)

  9. Verse 3 • Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over • You got to be DNA and I was feces • But I don’t want to be decay • At least I can be ure-aye (urea) • Nitrogen fixed to be in a plant

  10. Verse 3 cont. • And I wouldn’t catch you hung up on a nitrite that you used to know-oh-oh!

  11. Chorus • But you were denitrified! • Converted back to Nitrogen Gas all like we were nothing • Didn’t need oxygen but you treat me like decay • From the atmosphere

  12. Still Chorus • No, you didn’t have to leave our hole • Denytrifying bacteria • And then change your level • Guess your diatomic now • Now you’re just a nitrite that I used to know (x3)
