Political deadlock and the Great Coalition • Railway linking the colonies • Cancellation of the Reciprocity Treaty • The threat of American Expansion • Great Britain wanted the colonies to be more self-sufficient • Desire to expand settlement westwards *Try to determine which would be an INTERNAL or EXTERNAL force

  3. POLITICAL DEADLOCK AND THE GREAT COALITION • 1860S—difficult to get anything passed since “double majority” needed in both Canada East and Canada West • George Brown and John A. Macdonald and others agree to form a coalition to get the gov’t to work

  4. RAILWAY • Obstacles: -Can W, Can E, NS, and NB each had their own railways -No railway joined the colonies -St. Lawrence River froze in winter and prevented transport of goods between colonies

  5. Advantages: -intercontinental railway overcome the obstacles -distances between colonies shortened -move troops faster if US invaded

  6. CANCELLEATION OF RECIPROCITY TREATY • 1854-65 there was free trade between colonies and US no tariffs put on goods going to US stronger links to US than to colonies • 1865 Reciprocity Treaty cancelled colonies think about trading amongst themselves and increase economic prosperity

THREAT OF AMERICAN EXPANSION • Colonies believed they could withstand a US attack if they were together • Britain had supported the losing South in the American Civil War -Fear the US would take revenge on the colonies -Fenian Raids (attacks by Irish Catholics in US into the colonies to protest British rule in Ireland) • Manifest Destiny (American belief that it was their destiny to occupy all of North America)

GREAT BRITAIN WANTED COLONIES TO BE SELF-SUFFICIENT • 1860s GB’s relationship with colonies began to change • Debate in GB about the benefits of keeping the colonies FOR: -source of raw materials - market for manufactured goods - opportunity to emigrate AGAINST: -burden on British tax-payers - colonies should pay for their own defence and government
