  1. Chapter Journal 1Isabel Martin

  2. Manhwas and Mangas 1 Manhwa is the general Korean term for comics and print cartoons (common usage also includes animated cartoons). Manhwa has been influenced by the dramatic modern history of Korea, resulting in a diversity of forms and genres, including a mainstream style similar to manga. Distinctive manhwa can be found in editorial comic strips, artistically-oriented works, and webcomics serials. Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhwa Manhwa is read left to right, while manga is read right to left. Manga (kanji: 漫画; hiragana: まんが; katakana: マンガ) consist of comics and print cartoonsin the Japanese language and conforming to the style developed in Japan in the late 19th century. The Japanese word manga, literally translated, means "whimsical pictures". Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manga 4 2 3

  3. 1 2 Screen ToneAND THE PATTERNS (1.1) 3

  4. Screen Tone AND THE PATTERNS Screentone is a technique for applying textures and shades to drawings, used as an alternative to “hatching”. In the conventional process, patterns are transferred to paper from preprinted sheets, but the technique is also simulated in computer graphics. Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screentone Manhwa and Manga artists use screentone in their comics in order to imitate colour. You can put two different sheets of screentone on top of each other to create a different pattern. What would come next? THIS ONE THIS ONE What would be the 20th figure in the pattern? 1

  5. 1 2 FacesWITH POINTS AND LINES (1.2) 3 4

  6. Faces WITH POINTS AND LINES When drawing faces, with this style of art, you draw the guidelines with it. The guidelines on a face basically tell you at what height to start drawing. Points drawn onto the lines show you where the eyes, mouth, and nose go. Line JK is the line of symmetry, that divides the picture in half. 1 If F is between J and K, then FJ and FK are opposite rays. Points A, B, C, and D are all collinear. The line segment, or segment, EG consists of the endpoints E and G, and all points on EG that are between E and G. In this case it would be point F. Lines AD, EG, and HI all intersect with line JK.

  7. Maps AND MEASURES (1.3)

  8. Maps AND MEASURES It is necessary to be able to draw maps and the right proportion according to the maps. The distances in between cities on your paper need to be proportional to the distances on a real map. The points on a line can be matched one to one with the real numbers. The real number that corresponds to a point is the coordinate of the point. The distance between points A and B, written as AB, is the absolute value of the difference between the coordinates of A and B. AB is also called the length of line segment AB Measure the length of the segment AC to the nearest inch. Use a metric ruler. Align one mark of the ruler with A. Then align another mark on the ruler with C. Take the two numbers and subtract the smaller one from the larger one. The number you get is the distance. It doesn’t matter where you place the ruler. Wherever you put it, the difference in coordinates will always be the same.

  9. EyesAND THEIR ANGLES (1.4)

  10. EyesAND THEIR ANGLES The most important detail, in any type of art at all really, would be a character’s eyes. Eyes almost always show the character’s personality and feelings. Thin, narrow eyes generally mean that the person is harsh or the antagonist of the story. Large, round eyes usually mean that the person is cute, nice, or innocent. Normal sized eyes can mean anything really. They could be nice, mean, or just in between. In some cases the characters can have a certain type of eyes, but be completely opposite from it’s description. For example, Kuroyuri from 07-Ghost. It looks like he has a cheery disposition, but really he’s cold and cynical. Kuroyuri from 07-Ghost An angle consists of two different rays that have the same initial point. The rays are the sides of the angle. The initial point is the vertex of the angle. 1 Vertex Side Side 4 2 3

  11. PerspectiveWITH SEGMENT AND ANGLE BISECTORS(1.5)

  12. PerspectiveWITH SEGMENT AND ANGLE BISECTORS Perspective, in context of vision and visual perception, is the way in which objects appear to the eye based on their spatial attributes; or their dimensions and the position of the eye relative to the objects. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perspective_(visual) A segment bisector is a segment, ray, line, or plane that intersects a segment at it’s midpoint. In this case, the segment bisector of all the rays would be point A. The midpoint of a segment is the point that divides, or bisects, the segment into two congruent segments. An angle bisector is a ray that divides an angle into two adjacent angles that are congruent. In the diagram at the right, the ray AD bisects angle CAE into two congruent angles, CAD and EAD.

  13. 4 2 Buildings and ArchitectureAND ANGLE PAIR RELATIONSHIPS(1.6) 3 1 5

  14. Buildings and Architecture AND ANGLE PAIR RELATIONS It’s necessary to be able to draw real life buildings and complicated architecture in order to become a successful artist. With most things, you can take a picture of the actual buildings then transfer it onto your own paper by sight drawing. With other things you have to know the measures of the angles and the lengths too. Two angles are vertical angles if their sides form two pairs of opposite rays. Two adjacent angles are a linear pair if their noncommon sides are opposite rays. Angle 1 and Angle 4 are vertical angles. Angle 2 and Angle 3 are vertical angles. Angle 1 and Angle 2 are a linear pair. Angle 3 and Angle 4 are a linear pair. Angle 2 and Angle 4 are a linear pair. Angle 1 and Angle 3 are a linear pair.

  15. ManuscriptsAND PERIMETER 3 2 5 1 6 4

  16. ManuscriptsAND PERIMETER Manuscripts are special papers used for drawing the final draft of the comics. They can come with or without panel lines, because most artists prefer to just fill in the panels without having to take the time to draw their own. Manuscripts come with three frames pre-printed onto the paper. Find the perimeter and area of a paper measuring 10 inches in width and 14 in length. P= 48 inches A= 140 inches² C=6.28 centimeters Find the circumference of a G-Nib pen with a diameter of 1 centimeter.
