  2. Bullying defined • Bullying involves an imbalance of power between the bully and the victim, is intentionally harmful and occurs repetitively. (Olweus et al., 1999).

  3. Facts about bullying – adapted from the Kentucky State 4-H teen Council’s Bullying Program: “Bullying Awareness Lessons, Activities, and Resources” • An estimated 160,000 students miss school every day due to fear of bullying or harassment.

Girls who physically mature early are most oftenthe target of bullies.

Forms of bullying (http://bullying.about.com/od/Basics/a/6-Types-Of-Bullying.htm) • Cyber • is a growing issue among young people • it is when a tween or a teen uses the Internet, a cell phone or other technology to harass, threaten, embarrass or target another person • Cyberbullies often say things that they do not have the courage to say face-to-face because technology makes them feel anonymous.

Do’s and Don’ts– adapted from the bully, the bullied, and the bystander (Coloroso 2002) • Don’ts • Minimize, rationalize, or explain away the bully’s behavior • Rush in to solve the problem • Tell the victim to avoid the bully • Tell the victim to fight back • Confront the bully or the bully’s parents alone
