Lab events • Lab meetings • Wednesdays at 11am, starting July 5th • Everyone expected to attend • Standing meetings • Journal clubs • Fridays at 3pm, starting June 30 • Grads, senior scientists expected to attend • Undergrads and volunteers optional but encouraged • Upcoming Symposia • Q-Bio, GAUSSI, Biochemistry Department Retreat, Rocky Mountain Computing, IGAF

Chemicals and hazardous materials • Receive proper training • Stay informed about chemicals and their toxicity • Use appropriate personal protective equipment • Lab coat • Lab goggles • Wear appropriate clothes • Close-toed shoes • Full length pants • Long hair tied back • Use fume hood for hazardous and stinky chemicals • Phenol, chloroform, formamide, formaldehyde, etc. • Label all chemicals properly • Full names (ethanol) • Hazardous chemicals must be in cabinets and secondary containers
Hazardous waste disposal • Secondary containers • Weekly inspections • Disposal after 90 days • Chemical solid waste
Other lab hazards • Glass • Razors • Keep in styrofoam • Avoid using excessive force • Liquid nitrogen, dry ice • Exploding tubes • Centrifuges • Always balance • Microscope light sources • Gel Red • Don’t touch it
Leaving the lab at the end of the day • Turn off all bunsen burners & other flames • Turn off all heated stir plates & heated equipment • Turn off all microscope lamps • Check around if you are the last person to leave
Stay organized in the lab • Follow protocols • “Your protocol must be in your hand” –Kohta Ikegami • Take notes • Date everything • Keep personal inventories • wEN001 – Erin’s worms • pEN001 – Erin’s plasmids • oEN001 – Erin’s oligos • Contribute to lab inventories
Lab notebook • Everyone must have a paper lab notebook • Digital Lab notebook is available for regular lab members through LabArchives
Digital files – backing up • 3 copies across two locations • Work locally AND backup to EON-NAS (RAID5, 30-day versioning) • OR work on EON-NAS and backup locally • Third location • currently up to you • Options coming soon • Automated sync
Being courteous • Noise & talking • Headphones & music • Cleaning up • Do we need lab chores? • Shared jobs • __ Autoclave waste • __ dishwashing • __ tip & tube autoclaving • __ LB & NGM • __ spatulas (buy more) • __ M9 & liquid LB • __ Antibiotic box
Being hygienic • Enzymes in coolers • Sterile, clean technique when using stocks and enzymes • No double gloves in the hallways
