  1. Intro to the Intro Prewriting & Introductory Paragraph

  2. Prewriting • Preparing to write is an important step in the writing process. • Brainstorming will help you decide which side you are more comfortable writing about. • It will also help you organize your thoughts so that writing your essay will be an easier process. • Now, let’s get started. The first thing you must do: READ THE PROMPT VERY CAREFULLY!!! • If you do not understand then prompt, you can mess up your entire essay.

  3. Prewriting – The Prompt • Today’s prompt: • Writing Situation: Many celebrities—such as actors, musicians, models, or athletes—make a great deal of money. Some people think celebrities make more money than they deserve. Other people think celebrities’ wealth is deserved because of the enjoyment they bring to the public. • Do you agree or disagree that celebrities make more money than they deserve? • Directions for writing: Now, write an essay in which you persuade the reader that your side of the issue is correct. Use facts and examples to support your argument.

  4. Prewriting • A quick way to brainstorm for the Writing Assessment is to use a T-chart. • Create a column for Agree and a column for Disagree • For this topic… • Agree means I agree that celebrities make more money than they deserve. • Disagree means I disagree that celebrities make more money than they deserve. Here’s my brainstorming results…

  5. Prewriting – The T-chart • The work they do is easy and fun. • Their job is entertainment; whereas, other jobs are more deserving of the money. • They set bad examples…and their punishment is usually light. • Not just anybody can do what they can do. • They go to great lengths to be successful at what they do. • They give back to society. • They bring in the money; they deserve to get the money. • They lose their privacy.

  6. Time to Write the Intro…Here’s the format: • Remember the acronym BTO3. • B – Broad Statement: something in general about the topic • Every day,… • Most people in America… • In schools across the country… • Most teenagers… • Many people believe… • Every day, celebrities—such as actors, musicians, models, and athletes—bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars.

  7. The Format (continued) • T – Thesis Statement: your position (agree or disagree) • I agree/disagree… • I believe • Just state your opinion. • I believe that celebrities make more money than they deserve. • Stating opinion: Celebrities make entirely too much money.

  8. The Format (continued) • O – Opposition Statement: recognize the other point of view and then state that your opinion is more important. • Although the opposite of your opinion , there are a myriad of other reasons that prove what your opinion is . • Although the opposite of your opinion , the benefits/drawbacks what your opinion is .

  9. The Format (continue) • Although they sacrifice their personal lives for what they do, there are a myriad of other reasons that prove that celebrities make too much money. • An example using benefits/drawbacks: • Although online classes would benefit some students who learn at their own pace, the drawbacks to online schools outweigh the positives.

  10. The Format (continued) • 3 – 3 point sentence: the 3 topics you will discuss in the body paragraphs in the order that you will discuss them • DO NOT use in this essay/in my essay/I will explain!!! • Use the 3 points as a compound sentence with 3 sentences or as items in a series.

  11. The Format (continued) • Compound sentence • The work they do is easy and fun, they set bad examples, and other jobs are more deserving. • Items in a series example: • Online classes would cause students to be less responsible, educated, and social.

  12. The Final Product Every day, celebrities—such as actors, musicians, models, and athletes—make hundreds of thousands of dollars. I believe that celebrities make more money than they deserve. Although they sacrifice their personal lives for what they do, there are a myriad of other reasons that prove that celebrities make too much money. The work they do is easy and fun, they set bad examples, and other jobs are more deserving.

  13. Now, let’s write an intro together!!!

  14. Your Turn!!! • Writing Situation: Due to potential problems, many school systems have adopted a policy that bans cell phones and pagers on school grounds. However, some parents have provided these items out of concern for safety. • Do you agree or disagree that cell phones and pagers should be banned on school grounds? • Directions for Writing: Now write an essay in which you convince the reader of your opinion. Support your position with specific reasons and examples.
