Introduction to the Microscope: Understanding Functionality and Components

This lesson introduces students to the fundamental aspects of a microscope, including essential vocabulary related to its components and functions. Students will learn the definitions of key terms like "microscope," "resolution," and parts such as "eyepiece," "stage," and "diaphragm." The lesson emphasizes the importance of magnification and focusing techniques, guiding students on how to properly operate the microscope. By understanding these concepts, students will be equipped to explore the microscopic world effectively.

  1. Intro to the Microscope • Warm-up Pg. _____: Copy these vocab words and definitions into your notebook • Microscope: A scientific tool that helps magnify very small objects, like cells • Resolution: The sharpness of an image

  2. Eyepiece Course adjustment knob Body Tube Fine adjustment knob Nosepiece Low power lens arm Stage clip High Power Lens Stage Diaphragm Base Light

  3. Eyepiece EYEPIECE Magnifies object 10X’s

  4. High Power lens High Powered Lens Largest lens, 40X’s magnification, smaller viewing field

  5. Base Base One hand here when moving microscope

  6. Stage Stage Holds the slide

  7. Diaphragm Diaphragm Lets in light, can be adjusted

  8. Light Light Electric, must be turned on

  9. Nosepiece nosepiece Holds 2-3 magnification lenses

  10. Stage clip Stageclips Hold slide in place

  11. Low power Lens Low powered lens Smallest lens, 4x’s magnification, Large viewing field

  12. Fine adjustment knob Fine adjustment knob Fine tunes focus – improves resolution

  13. Body Tube Body Tube Removes extra light

  14. Course Adjustment Knob Course adjustment knob moves stage up and down use only on low power

  15. Arm Arm One hand here when moving microscope

  16. Magnification Eyepiece x lens magnification = total magnification 10x’s mag. X 4x’s mag. = 40x’s magnification (the image is 40 times larger then when seen with the unaided eye)

  17. Focusing the Microscope Start on low power lens with stage lowered SLOWLY bring stage up with course adjustment knob until image is visible Adjust the focus and resolution with the fine adjustment knob THEN move to high powered lens Adjust focus with fine adjustment knob ONLY
