General • Have a clear thesis that sets up your whole essay • Write CLEARLY and CONCISELY • Use proper grammar and spelling • Do NOT plagiarize • Do not use slang • No contractions ( i.e. don’t) • < 10 pages (excluding references & figures • At least 10 references • All pages double spaced, except the lit. cited • Sub-headings not required, but encouraged

  3. Figures & tables: • in separate section after Literature Cited • in order as cited in text • Number pages starting with first page • Use italics for scientific names (Peromyscus maniculatus 1st mention, P. maniculatus after) • Do not use ALL-CAPS 

  4. Tables & Figures • separate page for each • number consecutively ( as appear in text) • refer to each in the text • captions must be self-explanatory • any abbreviations must be self-explanatory • only essential labeling, detailed info in captions • all lines: 0.5 point minimum

  5. all symbols/numbers/lettering must be big enough & in proportion with other labels • Use same font style/size for all figures/tables • Follow labeling style of CJZ • If these are not your creations please reference at the end of the caption

  6. Literature cited follow format of CJZ see: • http://pubs.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/cgi-bin/rp/rp2_prog_e?cjz_instruct_e.html • In text: Name & year system: • One author: Smith (1990) found…. …was found (Smith 1990) • > 2 authors: Smith et al. (1990) found… …found ( Smith et al. 1990). 

  7. references at end of text • alphabetical order by surname of first author • Include all citations in references section • Do not include references you haven’t mentioned in the text • only significant published literature • NO webpages, no info a/b what Billy thinks
