  2. Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), one of the four major ligaments of the knee, is the most commonly damaged ligament. The ACL can be fully or partially ruptured during activities leading to sudden dislocation, torsion, or hyperextension of the knee. Athletes and women are at the highest risk for ACL injury. Treatment options for the injury include both surgical as well as non surgical, depending on the extent of the injury. It is estimated that more than 50% of ACL injuries are currently treated through non surgical options. However, since it is almost impossible to heal a ruptured ACL, non surgical treatment involves reconditioning the knee to the absence of a healthy ACL through physiotherapy and restore the normal range of knee function. This treatment prevents patients from taking part in high risk activities and also puts them at higher risk of developing osteoarthritis at a later stage due to increased rubbing of cartilage. Reconstructive surgery involves replacement of the damaged ligament with allograft or autograft and repairing any damage to the meniscus cartilage using arthroscopic techniques.
