  1. Aim: What are the characteristics of insanity? Do Now: Turn and Talk In the opening scene, Horatio doubts the credibility of Marcellus and Barnardo’sstory about the ghost.  How does Horatio’s doubt lead the audience to characterizeMarcellus and Barnardo?

  3. What if… There is a class member who doesn’t believe in ghosts, how would they view someone who does? Does that mean… Seeing things that aren’t there a possible characteristic of insanity? Therefore… What makes a person crazy, or let’s use the term insane?

  4. By law, insanity means: A mental illness of such a severe nature that a person cannot distinguish fantasy from reality, cannot conduct her/his affairs due to psychosis, or is subject to uncontrollable impulsivebehavior” (Law.com, 2014) Could insanity mean more than the legal definition?

  5. Activity We are going to look at three scenarios (settings). For each, complete all three of the following tasks; • React to the first scenario in writing • Discuss within your group – you will be timed. • Each person will record the group’s findings (conclusions).

  6. Scenario #1: United States History teacher, Nathanial, is very successful at his job. He is admired by his colleagues for helping his students achieve high Regents exam scores while maintaining a family of his own at home; a beautiful wife and darling son. He is loved by most students and teachers, gives consistent Regents prep classes after school where he offers extra incentives to those who work harder and achieve above and beyond because he values good work ethic. John F. Kennedy is his idol and he makes it known that he has a fascination with history and people in the United States Government. Nathanial’s room is papered with student work, textbooks, and several pieces of random black paper at the corners of the room, with one large black paper over the SMARTBoard projector. Since many teachers frequently use the SMARTBoard and are encouraged to use it as a tool to engage their students, many have asked him why cover-up such a great piece of technology? His answer: the CIA. Nathanial is a conspiracy-theorist who obsesses over the CIA’s involvement with the assassination of JFK and the constant fear that Big Brother is watching his every move. Nathanial gets defensive each time someone comes to counter his beliefs and refuses to use the SMARTBoard, or even uncover the lens of the projector and holes in the corners of the screen mount. The kids tease him about it and the principal frequently harasses him about his insistency.

  8. Scenario #3: He has surgically pointed ears, sharpened teeth, implanted whiskers and tiger tattoos covering his entire body and face. Cat Man, whose real name is Dennis Avner (50), is an American computer programmer by day, and a feline by night. Dennis has devoted much of his life to transforming himself into a tiger and now likes to be known simply as Cat. Claiming he has the soul of a tiger, he even eats raw meat and climbs trees to feel more at one with his animal friends. Cat lives a double life, being a human at work and a cat on weekends. He said, "During the day, I'm like any other man who works in an office. The only difference is I look like a cat. "My free time is when I behave like a tiger. I love climbing trees, but as I get older I'm finding that that's not an easy job." Having so far failed to find his perfect mate, Cat is still on the prowl for a woman to share his life with. He says, "I'm seeing a couple of women now. They understand that being a tiger is important to me, which is difficult for many women to cope with."
