  2. The End of the Dynasties • Last dynasty was the Qing • Opium Wars with the British • Forced China to accept domination by foreign powers • Sphere of influence • Revolutions in 1911 and 1912 the Qing lost power completely

  3. Civil War • China dominated by Japan during WWII • Revolutionary movement following the war • Nationalist forces (Chiang Kai-shek) fought Communist forces (Mao Zedong). • 1949 – Communists win, Nationalists flee to set up gov’t in Taiwan

  4. Mongolia’s Revolution • Mongolia’s Communist leaders won independence from China in 1921.

  5. Command vs. Market Economy • Command economy: economic system based on government planning and control. • Market economy: economy in which individual consumers and producers make all economic decisions.

  7. Great Leap Forward • Introduced by Mao in 1958 • Steel became the focus. Result? • More than 30 million Chinese died between 1958 and 1962! • Economic plan ignored the needs of the people!
