  3. The Federalists • The Federalists were supporters of the United States Constitution and argued for its ratification, or approval • They are led by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay • The Anti-Federalists opposed the new Constitution and argued against its ratification

The Federalists • Anti-Federalists feared that the new government would be too powerful and destroy individual rights • To win the support of the Anti-Federalists for the Constitution, Madison and Hamilton agree to support a Bill of Rights • To convice people to vote for the Constitution, Madison, Hamilton, and Jay write a series of newspaper articles for the people of New York

  5. The Federalist Papers • The Federalist Papers were a series of essays and newspaper articles Madison, Hamilton, and Jay wrote to defend the Constitution • There are 85 Papers • Hamilton wrote 52 • Madison wrote 28 • Jay wrote 5

  6. The Most Important Ones • Federalist Number 10: “Beware the danger of faction.” • Madison warns against political parties taking over • Federalist Number 51: “If men were angels, there would be no need for government.” • Men are not angels, and need government to secure order

  7. Signing Day • Thanks to the efforts of James Madison and Alexander Hamilton: • The new Constitution is signed on September 17, 1787 • The Constitution becomes the law of the land on September 13, 1788

  8. Election: 1789 • Now, who will lead the new government? • The first federal elections are held in 1789.
